The stupid thing about our economy is that I shouldn't HAVE to worry about the AI bubble bursting. Why do the innocent have to suffer because of rich people's toys breaking?

<philpem> isn't amd64 a third-party 64-bit patch on a 32-bit extension to a 16-bit enhancement of an 8-bit processor, originally derived from a 4-bit calculator chip by a 2-bit company who can't stand 1-bit of competition?

technically, he logs into root (or possibly an account called 'backdoor'?) before checking history so that means that whoever was using the account before that used Vi, not necessarily Kevin Flynn.

There are very few books I regret getting rid of, but I have one big regret. I used to have a nice collection of about a dozen “Jeeves and Wooster” books by PG Wodehouse, hardcover editions on nice paper. I had read them all and figured I’d rather have the shelf space back so I sold them to Half Price Books ages ago. I miss them. They are infinitely re-readable. If you haven’t ever read any of them I highly encourage it. Biting wit and humor at the expense of 1920s and 1930s upper class Britain.

I also recommend the 1990–1993 television series with Hugh Laurie as the perfect Bertie Wooster and Stephen Fry as the perfect Jeeves. Top notch.

Any ideas what a good (cost-effective) way to get a virtual postal address in the UK is, so I can put it on business forms etc without having to give out my home address? P.O. Boxes are the standard answer, but they are £45/month which seems a lot for something that will receive maybe one piece of post a year, if that. Looking at web sites for https://www.mbe.co.uk/, https://www.ukpostbox.com/ and https://www.postgrid.co.uk/ as well but I've no idea how trustworthy any of these kind of things might be.

I once looked into this for myself (due to living in flats + lack of trust) but the cost of services I found were around a similar price point. Be interested to hear if you find anywhere cheaper :neocat_thumbsup:

@TheDragon 🔥 One of my clients has just suggested https://www.hoxtonmix.com/, which is "only" £19/month so it wins over Royal Mail on price at least. He's used them for some years and recommends them as reliable, receiving and scanning mail, so that's a win over the random search results I found, where I have no idea about reliability. £19 is still more than I'd like really but… eh, maybe I just have to pay for privacy. 😕

Wot I dun today: planted a tree! "During" and "after" photos attached. I then poured a nearly-full washing-up bowl of water onto it from one of the water butts. Hopefully I haven't drowned it - I'm sure I've read many times that you need to give plants a lot of water when you plant them out.

"Wot I dun", last Thursday's edition: I think I've found out why 8 consecutive keys on my late uncle's digital piano keyboard don't work. While following traces on one of they keyboard PCBs I brushed away what seemed like a bit of blue-green dirt, only to find a little gap in the track underneath. I think the "dirt" must have been a crystal of corroded copper! The 8 keys the trace connects to are the ones that don't work, so I may have found the problem. Now just need to solder a bit of wire on to fix it. (Not sure I'm even going to try just bridging the gap with solder because it's in an area with lots of very tiny tracks very close together and I can barely see the individual tracks without a loupe. But either side are sparser areas where I should be able to solder a wire without too much trouble.)

My aunt has lamented that she didn't know while my uncle was alive that it was something I'd be able to fix. I didn't even know while he was alive that there was something wrong with it that needed fixing - apparently he was good at playing tunes that avoided those particular keys.

“Even today, when the planet is dark, there still is hope. Don’t lose hope. If you lose hope, you become apathetic and do nothing,” she said.

“And if you want to save what is still beautiful in this world – if you want to save the planet for the future generations, your grandchildren, their grandchildren – then think about the actions you take each day. Because, multiplied a million, a billion times, even small actions will make for great change.”

And then I would put [Russian president Vladimir] #Putin in there, and I would put [China’s] President #Xi. I’d certainly put [Israeli prime minister Benjamin] #Netanyahu in there and his far-right government. Put them all on that spaceship and send them off.”

Shamelessly stolen. I'm not sure I have ADHD but I surely have terrible burnout. I don't think I talk to anyone who'd say they didn't.

Anyway, I find myself naturally doing pretty much all of these things. I'm really trying to simplify my life, and being okay with just doing that "one thing" per day.

I'd sacrifice quite a bit to live in an environment with a high degree of sensory sameness

@surfhosting

I totally get what you mean, and feel fortunate to have that luxury, and equally sad that others don't have access to the same.

I've honestly learnt more about myself in the past few years via fedi, than I have in my entire life!

When I got diagnosed, I was told I'd have access to support as I grew up... Sadly when I needed it, I was turned away.

Given how little benefit I got via "the system", I'm not convinced exploring whether I fit AuDHD (formally) is even worthwhile.

Especially given the huge waiting list, and me joining wouldn't only lengthen it for others.

I missed this notification originally, but anyway the main reason I might push to get diagnosed is to potentially have a reason to not get kicked off Medicaid and/or SNAP (US medical & food benefits) if I'm still not sufficiently able to work when the new rules come into effect. After I lost my home, my sensory issues have made it very difficult to work consistently while living in other people's houses.

I hope and fully expect I'll continue fursuiting (and cosplaying probably) until I'm physically incapable of putting a suit on. Look out for an old grey-furred anthro animal shuffling along with a walking stick at cons in a few more decades! (And I'm certainly not going to cut off everyone I know even if I find I'm no longer interested in furry stuff. You lot are my people.)

To me, Furry isn't a "Fandom". It's a community. It's a culture. It's my tribe. It's my family.

I've never considered 'quitting' Furry. Interests and relationships change and evolve, but I don't know how I'd 'quit' my family.

okay that makes sense and small apologies I would've suggested otherwise.

I agree the friends I do have in the fandom are really nice. If we would land in a zombie apocalypse I'd rather be in it with them.

Turns out I misremembered. The transfer I am using is POP3 rather than IMAP. For my particular use case it made no difference whether I was using POP3 or IMAP, which is probably why I misremembered.

I am now wondering why I picked POP3 when I configured that. Maybe Gmail never supported IMAP in the first place.

The Gmail UI doesn’t have any indication of anything changing. And they know exactly who is using the feature, so if it is going away it would seem sensible to send an email to everyone affected by it.

Mythic Beasts mastodon (AP)

@kasperd yes, I think that's right. I think "check mail from other accounts" has always been POP3 only.

I think that support pages has only appeared in the last day or so, so we assume Gmail will be contacting people using it... but we're planning to contact our customers just in case.
