2008, me: I love the idea of cryptocurrency

BITCOIN: The word "cryptocurrency" now means "financial scams based on inefficient write-only ledgers"

2018, me: I love the idea of the metaverse

FACEBOOK: The word "metaverse" now means "proprietary 3D chat programs with no soul"

2022, me: I love the idea of procedurally generated content

OPENAI: From now on people will associate that only with big corporations plagiarizing small artists and turning their work into ugly content slurry

I'm really concerned about the effect "generative AI" is going to have on the attempt to build a copyleft/commons.

As artists/coders, we saw that copyright constrains us. So we decided to make a fenced-off area where we could make copyright work for us in a limited way, with permissions for derivative works within the commons according to clear rules set out in licenses.

Now OpenAI has made a world where rules and licenses don't apply to any company with a valuation over $N billion dollars.

To Recap:
•President Biden admits Israel is killing civilians
•NYT/NBC/Al Jazeera document Israel is killing civilians
•WCK/B'TSelem/Amnesty/UN/UNICEF document Israel is killing civilians

Yet the US is still funding arms to Israel. This is a clear violation of the Leahy Laws. Enough. We must uphold US and International Human Rights law and stop the invasion of Rafah.

Ron DeSantis signed a law that prevents municipalities in Florida from requiring that employers provide shade and water breaks for outdoor workers.

A study found that heat-related deaths in FL shot up by 88% between 2019 and 2022.

Folks, this is the GOP's vision for America.

On aphantasia:

“I dream, but not in pictures”

“I can write entire articles, documents, or conference talks in my head while out for a run. It’s usually quicker for me to create content in this way than sit at a computer and think about it. I can come in from a run and type out 2,000 words, transferring what I’ve written in my head to the document.”

First time I’ve heard how I experience the world described in words! Also why I take photos.

I came up with an encoder that can turn audio into a 115200 baud serial stream that when played back thru an RC filter, recovers the audio. :] #lookmumnocomputr

You can make this easy player here!

Oh niiice. I guess you used something like CVSD modulation or BTc to generate the BIN file?
Really cool hack to use a UART to do it!

EDIT: I just read more of the thread, using the comparator and an R-C to generate it - neat! yeah, that's CVSD, some old arcade games did it with a Harris chip.
if you wanted to do software emulation of the R-C, it is possible - Roman Black pulled it off in the 2000s with their Binary Time Constant algorithm

You know there is one advantage to being terrible at remembering people's names: I'm really good at forgetting people's deadnames, too.

It's a curse and a blessing. A blurse.

Foone🏳️‍⚧️ hometown (AP)

that is slightly a problem for me, since there's 3-4 trans people (and last year we had a cis guy who doesn't use his birth name too!) living here and sometimes deadname mail shows up.

So I gotta go on the house chat and be like "we got mail for a Steve, did anybody used to be a Steve?"

I’d like some suggestions (feel free to boost). I run a small club (80-100 people) and we need to collect annual dues. The actual payment processing I want to use PayPal (or similar). But for the membership management, tracking who has paid, emailing reminders, etc I want to #selfhost. I want to run a web site where people can login, see their dues status, get a link to go pay, cancel their membership, update their details, etc.

Anybody know some software I can run in like a #homelab or #selfhosted environment to manage club membership and stuff? The only constraint is that it can’t be Windows based. I don’t have any Windows infrastructure.

There are a number of good membership plugins for WordPress that might be good for this. https://memberpress.com comes to mind immediately (I can't say I've had to build such a site though so I can only suggest this one based on reputation).

Here's a brilliant neologism: "slop", for text generated entirely by LLMs and published, unwanted, on the Internet

> Watching in real time as "slop" becomes a term of art. the way that "spam" became the term for unwanted emails, "slop" is going in the dictionary as the term for unwanted AI generated content

I mean one of my first jobs was fix something where the only code was a literal assembly printout, somewhat faded, and a file for the binary that got burned to an EPROM. I had to patch in a jump to a separate bit of code I put in a spare bit of space and then back in to the right place.

LOL, no, not remotely comparing to what NASA did. It was a tote machine, and I could change the EPROM if I screwed up.

NASA are awesome

Fun bit of “throw the new guy in the deep end” though.

Here's an interesting case-study on the way the media/press distort reality:
"Children must show ID to use social media"
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/08/children-must-show-id-to-use-social-media/

Why is the word "children" in there? These ID checks don't only apply to children, it's an ID check that *everyone* will need to abide by since there's no way to know if you're a child or not otherwise.

The headline should say "All UK internet users must show ID to use social media"

In fact, for Children there's no point in showing their ID since doing so would mean their account would be denied.

It's *ONLY ADULTS* who will be showing ID at all.
