Back when they started, I actually hosted (for free) a mirror of their download site for a while. I don't remember receiving even a thank you. 🤷‍♂️

I also bought a Pi back when they were brand new. I think I missed the first batch, but got one of the second batch. I did try it out, booted it to a desktop, connected to our living room TV. Then I put it in a drawer and haven't used it again.

@LambdaCalculus I got a few because they were cheap and readily available for a time. One runs octoprint, another runs pihole, and a third sits unused. Never found a reason to connect them to hardware, just as a “I need a little dedicated machine for this” sort of device. For anything hardware I use ESP32

Yeah, I got a netbook for cheap that's great for writing stories on and not much else, which is great. Not a lot of soldering involved though, and Google kind of enshittified netbooks a while back so they can be a bit of a minefield. Mine, I was instructed not to install sound card drivers as the card is known to catch on fire if you're not using Microsoft.

On the left is data from the UK showing the number of people economically inactive due to long-term sickness. It fell for two decades and has exploded to record levels since the pandemic.

On the right is the US civilian labor force with a disability. It stayed steady for two decades and has exploded to record levels since the pandemic.

Both are at their record highs, and both still trend up. We're done with COVID, but it's not done with us.

I work on a vehicle tracking/fleet management platform and semi-recently it got a mobile app for local configuration of the devices via BLE. I fought tooth and claw to stop the app needing any sort of account or Internet connectivity, and (broadly*) won. You can still manage and configure your devices locally via BLE without any sort of Internet connectivity or account. I call that a win.

*Only thing you do need Internet for is push notifications, but that still doesn't need an account!

@stripey Heh. Everyone around the project was so keen to have an "account" and "log in with [projectname]" etc. I think just because the "big boys" like Facebook and Google have made that seem cool and the way to do everything.

I was generally opposed to having an app at all for a while. Like, just bring a serial cable and your laptop... But apparently "normal people" don't do serial cables anymore... sad times

We build a grid computing platform.

Edera. We're making a container runtime without defensive engineering, but instead hardened by design. Very Xen-inspired, and the only type-1 hypervisor w/ native container support.

We have a policy against ambulance chasing for company gain. We have the goal to do other than normal reviews and PIPs, but that's still to be planned out. On-call is being avoided, and never overtime.

I have so much hope and personal proof that this company is off to a strong, healthy start.

not sure if this fits the bill of "boring" but one tech sector I'm excited about and have been working in since 2016 is digital therapeutics. I've worked on multiple apps and games that have been validated by randomized clinical trials and cleared by the FDA to treat mental health issues like addiction, insomnia, and ADHD. Unfortunately, there is a lot of friction in the market and it's difficult for these startups to turn a profit. But I am optimistic about it in the long term.

I'm a librarian! I just released a boring library that helps you authenticate your e-mails without the user having to do it manually.

I spent fair amount of time to figure out API that is easy to understand and it only contains type conversions surface converting from other libraries that do good job on where my library yet doesn't and does not allow conversion from primitive types that can be mishandled.

It does one single thing and nothing more and nothing less.

On the other hand, I did enjoy reading this WSJ article. It's annoyingly paywalled, but if you get past it you learn interesting things like the fact that Silicon Valley companies spent $50B on NVIDIA chips and brought in $3B of revenue. And that MS's AI-led cloud revenue increase is largely a book-keeping exercise where other parts of the company are paying the cloud division to run AI things but not bringing in more money to the company. And that OpenAI is massively overvalued based on their revenue and revenue growth projections.

@stripey At least at Microsoft, the primary driver for the hype train is that the company missed the boat on smartphones and is absolutely terrified that they will miss the next big thing. So the flow is roughly:

Kevin Scott sees a shiny thing.
Kevin Scott must have the shiny thing.
Being the best at the shiny thing becomes the new corporate priority.
Satya Nadella gives a load of press briefings about how the shiny thing is the future of all computing and how Microsoft is a leader in the shiny thing.

A few optional steps:

Brad Cox gives a press conference to explain that the shiny thing may look like an illegal thing, but actually it isn't. And if it were, then that would only be because stupid governments hate innovation.
Kevin Scott drops in at a load of all hands meetings for various groups across the company to tell everyone that he's really rich and has a load of shiny toys, but he really wants the new shiny thing as well and so everyone needs to build one for him.

Typically, this is followed by enough investment to ensure that MS is leader for v1 of the product and then no investment for v2 of the product, so all of the people that worked on v1 get frustrated and go to competitors. The market share evaporates and neither Satya Nadella nor Kevin Scott mentions the shiny thing ever again. But it doesn't matter because by then Kevin Scott has seen a new shiny thing.

This is called 'leadership'.

Believe it or not, there is still plenty of interesting and exciting work to talk about that doesn't involve LLMs.

Cryptographers contributing to the IETF is working to standardize FROST, a two-round threshold signature algorithm based on Schnorr proofs, which is backwards compatible with Ed25519.

This means it will soon be possible to generate Ed25519 signatures from, for example, 4-of-7 shares held by independent parties. And the verifier doesn't need to do anything different; it's just an Ed25519 signature to them.

That's cool as fuck.

There's little-to-no hype about it.

i wish this turned into a "cool tech things that happened recently" thread so here goes my contribution

the new Sony A9 camera revision that came out last year has a global shutter CMOS sensor
which means the sensor takes the whole picture at once, and not line-by-line, so there's no more rolling shutter effect,

i've never seen that problem in my photos but it's particularly useful for video and probably low light photography and i hope more cameras will receive this

My field of work, AV programming, may seem "boring," and the tech we work with is fairly "simple," but when it works, it works! What most tech companies don't realize is two things. First, if you want happy customers, make sure your tech lasts a long time. Second, there's a human element to all this. Programmers are part of the reason why tech works. Cutting them off would result in a lack of a "soul" for a better word.

@RavenGSD I understand that the continued use of fax machines in the US medical field (and virtually nowhere else) is all down to an overly literal interpretation of HIPAA. It says something like digital transfer of medical records should only be done via secure methods "such as fax machines" (it was the '90s, after all) and generations of scared lawyers (picture Ted from Scrubs) decided that meant "only fax machines" rather than evaluate the legality of newer and better methods.

I love hearing about big companies embracing LLMs. I want them to. I can't wait to hear how their stocks tank and their customers flee when they start producing LLM-crafted garbage. Movie studios and streaming outlets are already seeing this happen. We need a really high-profile company, a Sony or Warner Brothers, to die because of it. We NEED this to happen. It's the only way they'll learn that we can do without the C Suite, but they can't do without actual talent. Late-stage capitalism must die for the economies of the world to revive.

1) CRDTs: Peer-to-peer collaborative editing has made huge strides in just the past decade!

2) DGGS: There's a lot of good work designing alternate trivially-processed spatial datamodels, which is hindered by people thinking lat/long are "real world".

I work in fusion and green tech, which shouldn't be doing anything LLM related... But now we get news of how we need more power to run all of the LLMs. So I'm getting tired of people now describing my work as existing solely to feed LLMs.

I know some people in other science fields that might do some ML work for small models (places where it is appropriate to use) that also run into LLM and gen AI BS getting pulled into their fields news one way or another.

I'm reminded of the time I had to quit a job because the (US) company got bought out. The new company was a multinational tech conglomerate based out of Canada.

This (again, multinational) company implemented a policy of minimum 3 days in office/week.

My nearest office was almost two hours away, one-way.

@Devourer_ITA What's extra stupid is if you have a Pixel device, and you use the keyboard to do transcription, you'll notice that the Google colors end up around the microphone when you use the gboard to do it. If you don't have a pixel device, it probably never has that.

The reason it's doing that is to indicate that it's actually doing on-device transcription. If for whatever reason transcription can't behave correctly it will end up showing it without that. Like if it can't initialize the TPU.

That's my understanding at least, and part of why the transcription on it is so fast.

It does the same thing for when you do live captions mode or for the "screen/direct my call" feature when you don't have Fi as your carrier.

There is enormous potential for on-device transcription models, but those always end up being the ones that never get a ton of fanfare even though they are ostensibly the most useful.

I am of the position that it is a moral necessity to make your consumer technology and machine products as durable, maintainable, and piecemeal upgrade-able as possible. During an outing to have dinner at 23:00, when there are not many options around but Denny's, and they have at the entrance a box full with crayons, making every disposable paper tablecloth a canvas. @colinstu I'm not sure my vote really would make too much of a difference. The riding my vote would be under has been a pretty strong Tory holding for years (since 1910), until the MP resigned from the party due to suspicion of rape, possession of controlled substances, and is currently sitting as an independent though not standing in this election.

every vote makes a difference (ok maybe exactly but it certainly cannot hurt). Not just your vote but so many other votes out there in general all thinking "it won't make a difference" can indeed lead to a difference.

Right wing LOVES voter suppression, the more the people are properly informed on the topics and are enabled to vote - the better for society. Fascism thrives off fear/doubt and silencing of opposition any means necessary.

@Kootenay Ours haven't arrived, even now, and we're in London! I'm going over to our council offices tomorrow armed with forms and IDs to get replacement ballot packs, then walking them down to our local polling station on Thursday to make sure they get there. On the other hand a couple of blurays Cinema Paradiso sent me yesterday arrived today, so the problems with the post are certainly not predictable.
