The government response has come in ... and it is of course, total nonsense, demonstrating total ignorance of the real-world collateral damage the OSA is causing.

So keep signing, sharing etc - the parliamentary debate now has to happen. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/722903

It's kind of weird randomly discovering today that my PhD thesis is listed on Amazon. You can't buy it (they "don't know when it will be in stock"), but it's got a page there. The damn thing's 25 years old now, almost completely uninteresting to me, but it's still out there. o.O (As far as I can tell it's pretty uninteresting to the theoretical computer science community too, as it appears to have been cited exactly once in all that time.)

Well. Today's the day - 25th July. The deadline for the implementation of age verification in the UK.

I wrote a post with my thoughts on why it is doomed to fail.

this entire thing is stupid and i frankly wish i could just fucking not have to deal with it, but alas, i am stuck in the UK on British internet for as long as i live, and i don't really feel like giving my face to a soulless megacorporation that's probably gonna sell my face data for AI training purposes and such, nor do i feel like handing over a photo of a legal document or whatever to some soulless megacorporation that's probably gonna end up getting hacked and my personally identifiable information will be stolen by hackers and i will be fucked six ways to sunday.

Or so they thought. Hope they like frozen beans!

If you're going to say something in public, expect someone to get mad at you for it. The more it matters, the more this will be true.

There's always going to be people that disagree with everything you say. It doesn't matter if it's right. It doesn't matter if you can prove it's right.

And some people regardless will never be happy unless you agree 100% with everything they want or say. They won't give or compromise an inch.

I'll tell ya' right now, nothing you can say or do will ever matter to these people. Don't waste your time and effort on these folks. Making them happy is like trying to reach out and touch the moon.

Do what you want, say what you feel you need to. Don't let people stop you.

But also try your best not to be these people. Listen to others, if they give you info that contradicts yours, investigate it and see if they're right. And try to take the high road when you can.

You can't make people determined not to listen or care do so, but you can be an example of the kind of person you want to see more of.

“I miss how I viewed the world before I knew too much about it”

Just seen this posted on a Peanuts cartoon. The artwork didn’t look like Schulz, probably AI, hence not reposting it.

But the sentiment of it caught my eye.

Its the old ‘ignorance is bliss’…but equally everyone reaches a tipping point in their knowledge, whether it’s #ClimateCrisis, #economics, #PoliticalLobbying or #MedicalCare.

You look under the bonnet and it scares you rigid in a way you sadly can never forget.

Overall, the philosophy is to attack the availability problem from two
complementary directions: to reduce the number of software errors through
rigorous testing of running systems, and to reduce the effect of the
remaining errors by providing for recovery from them. An interesting footnote
to this design is that now a system failure can usually be considered to be
the result of two program errors: the first, in the program that started the
problem; the second, in the recovery routine that could not protect the
system.

Your art is so cute. Thanks for sharing it.

Here we go, a two-fer for #WerewolfWednesday - 1994, Haunted Verdun Manor, Forney, TX. That's me in the then newly-finished Silvermane and Bart B_ in Lugaru, my previous suit. (Waves at Bart, wherever he is now; I've lost track over the years).

Imagine bumping into the two of us while going through a haunted house!

This was the only night Lugaru was "loaned out," and the only photo of both of us.

It really is neat to see the Verdun Manor werewolves throughout the years, and they've always been amazing work.

Arty and Mathias stand in it quietly, not needing to say anything. The sun’s almost gone, but there’s still enough glow to catch their eyes.
A pause, a look, and the feeling that everything is exactly where it’s meant to be.

The pieces I do are meant to be loved, not just approved, or feeling like a drawing factory to say "this is done, what's next", I think each piece needs to say something to someone, and I'm so glad this one achieved that for Arty and Mathias. I usually don't say this on my captions but I'm so proud of this one.

Traditional. Acrylic on canvas.

There is also a full version of that video, as well as the high resolution and the scanned of this piece, along other pieces that I haven't even shared on my galleries yet. Saw Prof Gina Rippon at the Norwich science festival a few years back…brilliant, funny and made neuroscience very accessible.

So glad she’s taking the fight to those who are claiming there is is an ‘over diagnosis’ of #autism taking place right now.

A diagnosis brings relief, self-understanding for adults and the hope of support for children /young people who desperately need it.

sorry everyone, my third wish from the genie was to make the world's electrical standards weirder.

south america is now using 70hz 40v AC, france & belgium are strictly DC outlets (no AC), and apple products are all on 3.3v USB. AA batteries are now 9v, and 9v batteries are still called that but they provide 6v.

same in everything as far as I can tell. Pay a consultant £300,000 to tell the managers what their staff have been telling them for years, but with buzzwords and a little illustrated booklet/pdf
Susa mastodon (AP)

This is EXACTLY how my job as consultant works! Absolutely precise!

Once I had a gut feeling that the people in the current project and I think alike. So I just told them: This is the problem your CIO wants me to address. You know as well as me that you know the solution. Tell me, I translate it to CIO - then he gets what he wants, you have the solution you need, and I have a good reputation and will be hired for he next project, too.
Worked perfectly.

I'm writing a little story and there's a fursuiter character in it, and I can't think of a good name for them. It's the narrator's fursona, doesn't really matter what species or anything, I just want something a bit less boring than I have currently. As a placeholder, they're a dog called Bouncer, but if you have a better suggestion, I'd love to know. 🙂 (I figure if I get some kind of outside input it'll give me the obligation to actually finish the story and get it online soon!)

I have no idea how people manage to talk in fursuit, and not only talk, but *give* actual hour-long talks. Examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DG4zQ8XYD84
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE20gAvnru0

I can barely talk at all in suit, and I don't *want* to talk (I'd much rather be silent). I don't know how people do it.

1
Pippin friendica
I suppose part of it might be that I've (still) never had a truly *good* fursuit. I've never felt I could afford to commission one, the two and a half fursuits I have are second hand and have all sorts of things wrong with them, so they are not good for breathing or speaking, and I've never been able to get the time and energy together to build a suit for myself. I have no reason to believe I'll ever be able to afford to commission a good suit, despite being deeply in love with fursuiting and absolutely aching to have one. But you can't unless you are rich, I guess.

Here's Spottacus giving a talk at Berkeley for 'Furries at Berkeley'... In fursuit, of course.

I only got a few opportunities over the years to talk.

He will be missed.
