More dancing rodents I found while looking for that one Nutcracker video that was all over last holiday season.

This is not that one, but it's fun too!

My email signature randomisation script picked an appropriate quotation for the weekend's #debian Bug Squashing Party:

[W]e found...that it wasn't as easy to get programs right as we had
thought. I realized that a large part of my life from then on was going
to be spent in finding mistakes in my own programs.

Pace is slowing, but we need this past 100k. We all know any debate they have will be poor quality, but we need to force them to have it. Don't let them sit back and think the Supreme Court decision is some kind of 'last word'.

Listening to this, reading about what it means on Wikipedia. Does anyone really talk to each other, and I mean *really* connect, really know what someone else feels, truly understand them? I don't know. The nearest I feel I've ever come is watching films and reading stories. A good author or director can actually communicate that. I want to be able to do that - I've been trying to write stories, but ultimately I don't know what to write, or how to write it. How can I get the state of my head into someone else's, so they can really understand me? I have no idea. Is that level of understanding "love"? Because I'm not sure I've ever had that.

We humans are the only species with the power to destroy the earth as we know it. Yet, if we have the capacity to destroy it, so, too, do we have the ability to protect it. Each one of us depends on our community to survive; today our community is the whole of humanity. If we want to look after ourselves, we must think about what our community needs. This Earth Day letโ€™s remind ourselves that we must learn to live together, to work together and to share what we have together.

My mum always used to say "wait" in a commanding tone when walking the dog and/or children and they got to a pedestrian crossing, and there would often be someone who was about to cross against the lights and would stop dead in their tracks. Now I know where Herbert got the idea for the weirding way.

Clever people design interesting machines to do useful things.
Marketing hires a second or third echelon to stop them doing it, unless a ransom is paid.

The second echelon are not so competent, and marketing are not so careful.

One of the most embarrassing absent-mindednesses in software development:

โ€ข decide carefully what you want to do
โ€ข write a clear, well reasoned source comment and/or commit message explaining the decision
โ€ข forget to actually change the code.

1 1
Leeloo mastodon (AP)

On the positive side, you have documented what you wanted to do, and (presumably) a commit showing that you didn't actually do it.

Seems like a much better situation than having some code that doesn't make any sense and no explanation why. Like a few days ago, I asked myself why I added 120 seconds to the current time before displaying it. No comment, so a guess could be that it was a test that accidentally got committed, but I can't see anything logical I could have been testing. I mean, next time I run the program, it will already be two minutes later.

I appear to have just wasted pretty much the whole day playing an automation base-building game in a way that, when I take a step back from it, I don't actually find all that much fun. I don't know why my brain prefers to do the repetitive things over and over instead of just automating, like the game intends, and freeing myself to move up to higher-level game mechanics. I just sit there manually shuffling resources back and forth, getting bored, for no reason. Clearly I just have stupid-brain.

Itโ€™s a detail that none of us wants to think aboutโ€ฆwhat will happen to our children and dependents after we die.

I remember making a #will before my kids were born and addressing the details felt grim even then.

But what if you have children with #SpecialNeeds? It turns out you need specialist advice, a standard will wonโ€™t help, it could make your childโ€™s life far worse.

Worth reading.

Here's some incorrect advice being given out by Forbes magazine about announcing price increases. Contrary to the nonsense stated here, actually using straightforward terms and owning the price increase makes the customer feel like the company is being honest, whereas using weaselly neutral language makes the customer feel like the company is being evasive, cowardly and dishonest.
1 1
Mrs Beanbag mastodon (AP)
why would a price increase make a customer think they were being overcharged previously? that doesn't even make any sense.
