i can't possibly point out enough just how much of a dumpster fire #fediblock is honestly, the extremely hostile attitudes of some people on there towards anyone with differing opinions make the fediverse worse for everyone
we should know better than to blackmail other people in the same boat with us with defederation over their smallest mistakes. we should know better than to treat good-faith efforts to bring fedi to more people the same as bigotry. we should know better than to let petty infighting fracture the network.
defederation should be used as a last resort, against openly malicious and/or fascist instances. not against decent instances with good people on them but some miscommunications/controversy once in a while.
so admins, please stop forcing your personal subjective choices upon your users. individuals can very well decide for themselves whether or not to block an instance. guess what: you can also partially limit other instances, and you don't have to make huge dogpiling campaigns out of it either way
(all this does also apply to the fedipact and bridge stuff)

@Extelec Is it the usual 433MHz simple RF protocol style, or something a little fancier e.g. Zigbee? I think the Hive is meant to be Zigbee but they stuck some proprietary nonsense on top.
Found a channel full of vintage computing furries, invite someone I know there that works at the local particle accelerator because he has access to some cool, old tech. Fairly niche. A discussion starts in the channel only for another furry who works at a particle accelerator across the country to begin sharing their work, too.
Hey remember what I was saying about how Cohost was going to announce they were closing and only THEN start work on export tools for people's posts, which I guarantee they will not do because as of today they're already no longer paying themselves, and there's no way they're going to work on the site that hard when they find other jobs?

If Labour had any sense they would’ve got Ed Miliband to make a move to immediately reform the electricity market so that wholesale prices aren’t largely determined by the price of gas fired generation. Some of this stuff is a risk for all cars as we head towards an ever more computerized future. Not only that, but imagine millions of vehicles with outdated firmware, collecting data on us for years and becoming more and more vulnerable to hacking as they age.
The future is a Black Mirror episode, and it sucks.
As much as I like that computers have gotten a lot more accessible to people, I still wish that people on the whole had gotten more computer literate and tech savvy instead of computing becoming what it is now. Computers making things easier for users often comes with vendor lock-in and things "that just work" all only just working because they're from the same manufacturer.
Also people seem pretty incapable of learning new tech and different workflows now which is... frustrating. We used to use raw HTML on our MySpace pages.
There is a huge difference with being taught to understand computers and being taught to use a product that just happens to be ON computers (or to be more accurate tablets)
@avon_deer Only kinda related, but Apple really needs to ditch iPadOS and just stick macOS with a modified interface onto their tablets. And also yeet the menu bar while they're at it. It's wild to me that iPads are as powerful as Macbooks but have the operating system of an iPhone.

Oh wow, LinkedIn is the worst... They have suspended my account, due to "suspicious activity" (aka me getting annoyed with all the notifications and therefore not using it for several weeks). To recover the account, they want me to submit a photo of my ID, and I am obviously not doing that. So, the next step is account deletion: The only documented process is through the account settings, but I am not able to access these, since I am prohibited from logging in. But not all hope is lost: Thanks to the power of the GDPR, we can submit a data deletion request. Unfortunately, submitting the form fails with an error, and I get redirected to a help article that describes how I can send them a picture of my ID. What a weird coincidence...
Today, I replaced two double mains sockets in the bedrooms (one by my dad's bed, one next to mine) with double sockets with built-in USB power ports, tested all four of the TV sockets scattered around the house (they all work), and also scooped nearly half a bucket of mossy slop out of the gutter on the front of the garage. Home ownership is phun.
Disclaimer: While I'm sure it's lovely, I have yet to actually use Postgres. I've just never had the push to do so yet — everything I've used so far has wanted MySQL (or SQLite, or…). Also, I wish I had the energy to pick up new things like I used to.
@Soatok Dreamseeker @Q ✨ MySQL and co have certainly grown up a *lot* since mysql was first being compared to Postgres. I've definitely had MySQL/MariaDB databases very occasionally shit themselves in various ways over the years, but at least I know enough I can usually clean up and make it work again. I've read quite a few times (admittedly mostly a long time ago) how much better Postgresql is but I don't have the experience to know if corrupted tables and the like are any less common there. I'm sure I'll give it a go someday, maybe I'll find out! In the meantime, agreed, mysqld certainly does the job, without fuss, pretty well, pretty much of the time.
