When folks argue that a Universal Basic Income would deter working, think about those million-dollar CEOs. If a modest $15k is enough to make one quit working, wouldn’t multi-million dollar packages make CEOs practically comatose? Yet, here they are, still CEOing. Weird isn't it?

spotify is (allegedly) using ai to generate generic music (allegedly) attributed to made up fake artists with generic names that (allegedly) suspiciously only exist on spotify to (allegedly) fill their famous pre-made playlists to (allegedly) send out to users to (allegedly) avoid having to pay actual artists and (allegedly) get 100% of the income instead of 30%

nano iceshrimp (AP)
- spotify pays artists the lowest amount in the industry
- spotify has never been profitable
- the only reason spotify exists is because it got in early and secured lots of funding
- spotify's actual service is fucking terrible and makes a conscious effort to prevent you from using it like a traditional music player and more in spotify's unique way
- spotify is wasting all of the money they should be giving to artists on ways to avoid giving money to artists
unsubscribe from spotify of the love of all that is good in this world

if you ABSOLUTELY MUST use a streaming service for your music, use apple music, deezer, or tidal. but i heavily HEAVILY encourage you to buy music on bandcamp, qobuz, and physical media (cds are digital lossless, you can rip them to your computer and convert them to any format you like, including flac)

riaa officially declares 1500 streams to be equivalent to ONE album sale. support your favourite artists.

Wow: "Researchers in South Africa have injected radioactive material into the horns of 20 rhinos as part of a research project aimed at reducing poaching. The idea is that radiation detectors already in place at national borders would detect the horns and help authorities arrest poachers and traffickers."

Now _radioactive_ aphrodisiacs. Let's be careful out there.

(I'm just sorry no one did this years ago.)

If you know anyone who is planning on not voting because ‘it won’t make a difference’, explain to them how public funds are allocated to opposition parties (so-called Short money). £42.82 for every 200 votes gained by the party. More than 20p per vote. Per year. Every vote counts!

Edit: Don’t just favourite this, boost it. People need to know!

That's one thing ticked off my list to do today.

The polls are still open for a few more hours - if you're in the UK and haven't voted yet, you've still got some time!

Canis Rufus mastodon (AP)

So it's election day. Normally I'd post a picture of my polling station as I vote and say "go vote" but I voted last week by post.

Still going to say "Go vote if you haven't" though, and remember to take ID because of Boris's new voter suppression laws. This time around it's even more important.

Also.... usually I'd say vote for whoever you want, but..... vote for who you want if its not Conservative or Reform, or vote for who you reluctantly need to in order to reject the current bastards and stop Farage's even worse shower of racist homo/transphobes.

If you support either of the parties who have ruined and looted the country and/or want my friends (and me) either dead or erased from society then kindly eff off.

Go and vote. Yes, it might not make much material difference, and Starmer's Labour might be utterly shit, but watching the Tory party implode like a submarine full of billionaires tonight is going to be very funny

Just saw a car fan post that while EVs have their place, they're not 100% the answer.

And I guess they're right! We still have steam engines too! In the rural American Midwest we have "thresherees" where old-timers preserve the skills and history of running steam engines.

50 years from now we'll have car shows that will preserve the remaining fraction of automobiles and their enthusiasts to educate younger generations how greasy and complicated and inefficient moving people and goods around used to be.

(Assuming civilization lasts that long...)

On a related note, the skills of crewing a full rigged ship are apparently dying, and the VHS rip to YouTube video that I watched that info on was like from the 1980s. I guess some stuff does die out eventually. It was really weird to see people in mullets hauling on the running lines.

Important info for anyone voting in the UK today - your ID does NOT need to be in date. It only needs to look like you. Old passports and driving licences are totally allowed.

Pass it on! Tell your friends and family. Tell your neighbours.

Maybe I need to get some bear stuff. Maybe that's what I'm missing. I've wanted a bearsuit for decades now and still haven't got that far, but maybe random small bear stuff would help.

Bear painting on wood for #anthrocon art show! I'm so happy with how it turned out. Our bear friend is using some nature magic to grow a new tree to heal the forest.

Edit to add: this wood was acquired second hand and reused!

It's the last day to be lgbtqia+ of 2024!

Tomorrow, it's time return to work after the normal month off to be gay, start taking down the queer tree (or leave it up if you're tacky like that), and resume being straight and cis for the rest of the year.

Do/Have you used a CD/DVD/Bluray in a while?

What about burning a disk?

I'm surveying modern day awareness/usage of optical media, mostly to confirm some demographic theories, so if you know what a CD/DVD is, please help me (and maybe others) out by answering some ~10 questions here:

https://optical-media-survey.benjojo.co.uk/

And then please boost for better visibility! Thank you!

I watch movies and tv shows on DVD/Blu Ray almost every week. Was an early adopter of DVD in 1999 and never stopped using the format. I still buy music CDs.
As regards burning, haven’t done that for a while. I tend to back up all my discs to external HDs, though.
I only stream if the movie or show I want to see isn’t available physically.
