The place I'm currently holidaying at has a basement that just shouts [TENSE MUSIC INTENSIFIES]:

I have broken my ATGATT streak. It was only 300 metres, to put the bike away in the garage, but I couldn't be bothered putting the full set of gear on yet again, and the speed and duration, and therefore the risk, were pretty minimal, so I didn't. So I did this instead. I passed a few pedestrians on the way along the road to the garage and I'm sure I must've got a few double-takes. 😝

(It was kinda worrying though, don't think I'll do that again!)

Go go little caterpillar I saw walking across the pavement earlier this afternoon! You can do it, find somewhere safe!

Cause and effect.

I didn't know they actually sold these for real!

I managed to get hold of a replacement battery for the bike today, phew. Was going to order from MDS (my usual go-to place for UPS batteries) but found the local Halfords had it Β£5 cheaper and available to walk in and collect rather than waiting a day or two (or paying another Β£5 for next-day). So that's now sitting on charge. Turns out they no longer sell these batteries un-activated with a bottle of sulphuric acid because the acid's now classified as a poison. So it turns out the label on the box says the battery was activated last month, which could be up to 8 weeks ago, so I'm giving it a good charge first, and installing it tomorrow.

I had the steering head bearings replaced today (which involves taking the whole front of the bike apart apparently so I'm glad I didn't try to do that myself), and while I haven't tried the steering with the front wheel off the ground I did give it a ride around and… I think it's better? I think it's more subconscious, but I think I can detect myself riding a bit more confidently, which would be because the handlebars are no longer trying to pull to the centre when they are *nearly* centred, which is what the problem with the bearings would have been causing.

So, battery swap tomorrow morning, MOT test tomorrow afternoon, trip to Wales soon after that…?

[Delayed post from a few hours ago.] Welcome home, me! Haven't seen this for a while. I hope this will become a more familiar sight. Only thing now is, do I *have* to change? Couldn't I just stay like this indefinitely? (Answer: no, not if I want to eat!)

A road, near Shepherd's Bush, that I cycled along on my trip to see a potential client on Friday. It was really rather pleasant to see something like this in London β€” a fully pedestrianised road with a line of trees down the middle of it (giving shade and making it kinda difficult to allow motor vehicles in!), still fairly wide (not just footpath width) and it looks like it would make for a rather nice place to live! Don't we need more of our residential roads to be like this, rather than being designed mostly for cars with narrow footpaths along the edges?

I feel I need a friend like Ronb1nt5cat5co.

@Cheetah Obscura I can only read those words in Kenneth Williams' voice, from Carry On Screaming.

Aaaand… just checkin'. Yep. Even with the sun shining directly into my eyes, you can't see in. 😁

[From a couple of hours ago] There we go! Me, bike, ready for a ride. Haven't done this in a long time! πŸ™‚

Oh. In the text entry box in Friendica it shows the username I'm replying to, but that disappears when I actually post - I assume it's in metadata so Friendica decides it doesn't need to be in the actual post text. But then I do see plenty of replies posted from Mastodon which also don't start with a username, but *are* threaded properly, so the post it's a reply to must be correctly listed in the metadata there too. When I click through to my reply on your instance it does show it properly threaded, so… I dunno? As you can see in the screenshot below, most of the other replies in this thread don't have a username at the start either, as shown on my Friendica instance. On the other hand, clicking through to the same thread on your Mastodon instance shows usernames at the start of every reply except mine. I don't know. It does seem to thread correctly though.

My biggest niggle is that Friendica shows only @-style usernames inside replies, but only display-names at the top of posts and replies, so matching them up sometimes requires annoying mousing-over to check usernames. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Sorry, it's annoying, I guess it's just slightly different interpretations of some spec by different software.

Yeah, that does seem to happen occasionally. I assume it's a bug somewhere. It happens rarely enough that I can say "oh, that again" and ignore it though. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Back in April my sister got married, and I took Kelsey to the reception! He got quite a good welcome, from the children there in particular, and I found this bit of video my dad took. These two little girls (twins, I think) ended up following him around all evening (well, the hour or two I was in suit), utterly enamoured. 😁

And when I finally got home… exhausted! Collapse.

Amazing how similar this area now looks, in the summer, to Mediterranian regions. When I was young we had to go to Spain to see scraggly dried-up grass scorching in the sun everywhere like this…

Okay, that was a rather nice time! From the moment I got there I was swamped with people wanting photos. Walked around the showground once or twice, had a lot of nice encounters and a small number where I wasn't sure what was going on but none that were actually bad, which is good. πŸ™‚

No time for pictures while I was there, but I did get a few on the way home.

On my way to Mitcham for the carnival. 😊

Aha, nailed it! It's always good when the centre lines up perfectly (or this close!)

(Meant to post this on Saturday, but Friendica doesn't support uploading videos… not sure what the best workaround will be. Install peertube!? Anyway…)

Sun's out!

My parents had vaccination booster appointments today and I suggested we go for a walk somewhere afterwards. Worked quite well in the end, I drove them to the vaccination centre, then to Cheam Park where we walked (a very gentle stroll because… parents), had lunch at the cafe and walked a bit more. Quite a nice couple of hours. It's been a long time since we went and did anything like that rather than just sitting at home all day.

Oh good. πŸ™ƒ

Another speech bubble pic from last night.

Precision parking by the white van driver, or blind luck on my part? 😝

Last night's dead dog party versus staff party.

Last day of ConFuzzled! 😁

This font reminds me of the font in some old Atari 8-bit games by Russ Wetmore.

a friend is nearly in tears because changing their KDE font to opendyslexic also changed the font ePubs render in in okular, meaning they can actually read their assignments.

this is why apps respecting your preferences is important, and it's why libre software (and KDE in particular) is so awesome.

unrelatedly, fuck electron.

Content warning: Okay, let's have a bit of a rant about car infrastructure.

If you must blink, do it now.

Just finished watching Kubo again, and it's still good! (I was going to say, I wonder if Laika's ever made anything bad, but then I looked up their filmography and Missing Link is on there, which I don't honestly remember anything much about so I can't say whether it's good or bad, but it certainly hasn't stuck in my mind like their others have.)

Only thing I found disappointing with Kubo was that the stop-motion is so good I keep forgetting it's stop-motion and it comes across like it's just perfectly ordinary CG animation.

My nephew's hoodie shows his attitude towards being so very graciously present at my birthday gathering at the weekend. 😼

This horror/noir version of the union jack on a bottle of handwash seems depressingly appropriate for our post-Brexit world…

War-profitteering energy companies make this necessary. 😑

You know who else has lots of white fur and wants to hug everyone all the time? ;)

(Oh god I need to rebuild him sometime! I have had the fur sitting here for years and years and years, I just need to actually get on with it!)

Pretty sure this character has just been entirely made up, but it's written so authoritatively and sounds so plausible....

But "remember how I told you to end your stories one sentence earlier?" ;)
