My uncle died about a year ago now, and one thing my aunt is gearing up to get rid of is his music collection. He had *hundreds* of CDs of classical music, many of them near-duplicates, because he may have already had a piece but wanted a particular conductor's version, or a performance by a particular orchestra.
Is there anyone here who might be interested in such a collection as a whole, or knows of someone who might? I feel it'd be good to find a home for it as a whole rather than selling every disc off separately.
I can sympathize.
My spouse passed a few months ago, and I'm having trouble finding new homes for her things. There is a reluctance to do that. It can take months or years to get past that.
Advice from a therapist: If you're stressed out, it's fine to fall back to older, comfortable things. Not all experiences have to be new.
If there's some movie or TV show that feels good to watch, watch it. Don't worry about new things you might be missing out on.
If you just need to veg on the couch for a few days, do it. Sometimes you have to let the chores and hobbies wait.
Oh jeez, I don't know what I'd do without my comfort music of Trek in the background.
But you never want to run at 100% all the time. It's totally ok to veg when needed and not feel guilt about it!
Taking care of yourself mentally and physically (especially as we continue getting older) becomes more priority.
Rien the raccoon and Sebastian the kangaroo are having a sleepover during a rainy evening, outside the sound of the storm becoming the background music for their video game marathon.
Despite they were told to go to bed early, the decision to keep playing more levels was stronger.
I truly enjoyed painting this piece, capturing the cozy feeling of wanting the night to last just a little longer, and the warmth of the moment of a good company.

Pity. If I was more than one person my business would qualify for this kind of thing. (I don't actually have any customers with managed dedicated hosts right now, but could easily do so - I colo machines for some customers, and I do OS-level management for other customers. Could certainly buy a machine, colo it and manage it for someone. But… I don't have a twin. 🤷)
Still struggling to find a secondary hosting provider in the UK who meets the following criteria:1. Dedicated hosting (i.e. a server to ourselves)
2. Managed hosting (OS-level security updates, monitoring for disk use, failure etc.)
3. Enough members of staff to be resilient (not a one-person business)
4. Front-line staff who answer tickets know what they're talking about
5. Small enough to care about fellow SMEs
6. Not Mythic Beasts (because they're the primary provider)

During BLFC, Kibou was sitting next to me taking commissions with crayons, something truly adorable to see.
I understand that feeling, just drawing for the joy of it, not worrying about perfection, not overthinking, but simply enjoying every color and line, and sharing that happiness through it.

Winter Flu season apparently is gonna be bad.
If you don't qualify for a free Flu vaccine on on the NHS, you can get one cheap from plenty of places.
Try supermarket pharmacies like in an Asda. They usually do them fairly low cost.
When I had a stroke I was actually quite shocked at the lack of information from NHS when discharged.
When I had a fall I had like four separate "you broke, or nearly broke, this that and the other" type advice sheets. Very good stuff.
For a stroke I only had one thing on speech issues (with a number to call if I had problems, yes, really!). Nothing on what is a stroke, or why, or what to do next.
But it seems that if ever I have a hip replacement the NHS has detailed advice for me... Phew.

Speaking as a CD collector, you might well find someone to take the collection, but you will probably not find a guarantee to keep it intact, unless your uncle was famous for a related reason.

Robert Garrova (LAist)i can safely assure you a library would absolutely not be interested. the license on the recordings will be personal use only, no lending. and in any case i know of no libraries that are looking to grow their collections in this medium.
i don't know if there is anyone rushing to try and digitise and archive this stuff before it's lost forever.
when my grandfather died, leaving a mountain of DVDs, home movies of family over his lifetime, I took possession of all of them. I then ripped each one and built a website for the whole family to be able to watch them.
Maybe you could do the same? Rip the entire library and donate it to the commons as a great big torrent in his name.

This has over 150 boosts and a dozen replies which is absolutely bananas - I'm not sure I've ever posted anything that's had more than about 5 boosts before. I've had to mute this thread because I can't keep up with the notifications and I don't know what to say to all the individual replies, sorry.
It sounds like a lot of people think this collection of CDs is a lot more significant than it probably is, possibly because it's a post from someone you don't know that's getting boosted around the fediverse which makes it look important. It sounds like it might be possible to find someone who'd like it all.
A few points:
1. Hampshire, UK.
2. CDs have never had region coding, the way DVDs and BDs have.
3. I have little knowledge of music (classical or otherwise) so I couldn't say what type of classical music this is. I know a few of the CD cases are labelled with ranges of composer names (like "Bach - Griegg" or something - I have no idea what composers are there though, I'm just pulling names out of the air, and I haven't actually opened the boxes to look inside yet).
4. I have my doubts about whether any of this is particularly rare or would need to be "saved" and archived, but I suppose it's possible.
So, I guess I can tell my aunt there may be interest in someone acquiring the whole lot, so it might be worth a bit of time to try to catalogue at least some of it. Any ideas where I go from there?

Also, for the catalogue, I can recommande you to list everything in compositor name, in alphabetical order
Like :
Bach (and the CD about his pieces)
Beethoveen
Chopin
Etc
If it can help
No need to put the pieces in a particular order
It could be too much time consumer because the right thing could be to put it in chronological order (I mean : Bach write some piece at the beginning of his life and some later, etc)
So too much time to search etc.
If this is a really big collection, you can put in little boxes like
All the B for one (Bach, beethoven, etc)
C for another with Chopin, etc
Or maybe A to C , etc
It is hard to say without knowing much
And I understand it is hard to tidy everything with not lot of music background and dealing with the grief

Have a fairly firm idea of your inventory. For anything that looks interesting look it up on eBay. But most importantly, know your stuff's worth. Don't take the first pitch. Get multiple quotes if you can.
Someone may have already suggested but it might be worth asking the Internet Archive - might not want the physical discs (depending on relative locations between the you and them) but may well be interested in rips if not.
