#IPv6 usage in the UK now over 50% according to Google. Still someway behind Germany (75%) and France (84%) but to out of context quote Jon Bon Jovi, "woah oh, we're half way there'.

Clever people design interesting machines to do useful things.
Marketing hires a second or third echelon to stop them doing it, unless a ransom is paid.
The second echelon are not so competent, and marketing are not so careful.
One of the most embarrassing absent-mindednesses in software development:
• decide carefully what you want to do
• write a clear, well reasoned source comment and/or commit message explaining the decision
• forget to actually change the code.
On the positive side, you have documented what you wanted to do, and (presumably) a commit showing that you didn't actually do it.
Seems like a much better situation than having some code that doesn't make any sense and no explanation why. Like a few days ago, I asked myself why I added 120 seconds to the current time before displaying it. No comment, so a guess could be that it was a test that accidentally got committed, but I can't see anything logical I could have been testing. I mean, next time I run the program, it will already be two minutes later.

It’s a detail that none of us wants to think about…what will happen to our children and dependents after we die.
I remember making a #will before my kids were born and addressing the details felt grim even then.
But what if you have children with #SpecialNeeds? It turns out you need specialist advice, a standard will won’t help, it could make your child’s life far worse.
Worth reading.

"Lesbians have a strong history of supporting more marginalised parts of the community. We were there for gay men during the ‘80s and ‘90s when prejudice around AIDs and HIV was at a peak. So why would we not be there for the trans community, especially when they face a similar barrage of online hate, often founded on fiction rather than facts?"
Tracks. I've met gay guys with pretty awful opinions about trans people, but I've yet to meet a lesbian with similar opinions.
This year Lesbian Visibility Week is bringing together the UK’s largest queer and lesbian groups around the theme #UnitedNotUniformQueerAF
Selection bias (for the set of "people I've met") definitely applies here - so take this with a grain of salt. Equally I'm up for meeting new people ... just not necessarily ones whose world view boils down to "this group of people I hate should be dead".
edit: A friend just messaged me to say "yeah I've met a couple but they're really rare"
I've run across a paradox where I am trans and therefore cool but don't think I'm cool so therefore I'm not cool.

Some time last year, someone screen-shared a VSCode editing session with me, and I noticed it was highlighting brackets in source code in different colours according to their nesting level mod 3, so that it was easier to see which ones matched which.
That wasn't enough by a long way to make me switch editor from #emacs, but it seemed like a cool feature, and I occasionally thought about it wistfully.
Last week I mentioned it in passing to a friend, who said "Oh, in vim that feature is called 'rainbow brackets'". Then suddenly it was easy to find implementations for emacs too. I tried out https://github.com/Fanael/rainbow-delimiters the next day to see if I'd _really_ like it. After a few days, it's clear I'm going to keep it (after reconfiguring it so I can actually see the difference).
Knowing the right search term is everything!

As long as there is a way to make something make more money, some person that values money over all will force it to do that thing.
This is part of why I've started leaning so heavily away from things where the primary motivation for them is making money.

"Do you really not have any friends who could help," the demon asked
"I cannot show weakness."

@TheDragon 🔥 I've successfully avoided Amazon since January 2020. It's not as convenient as getting everything very fast from one place but I've found plenty of other places to get things from.
I'm finding that just about any place that has a "marketplace", where third parties can sell their own stuff through what looks like a single vendor, seems to get stuffed with crap very quickly, some of which doesn't even exist and others are cheap rubbish. Sometimes they use tricks of the platform to make themselves look cheaper/better than they are, like for example I've been seeing stuff on ebay where there are options for size/colour/etc, they'll add something like a "SIM eject tool", about the cheapest tool possible, as one of the "size" options just so that they get listed first when you sort by price.
I can only imagine when they figure out how to use generative models to produce listings (or do a better job of it than now) we'll find ourselves even less able to actually locate anything worthwhile.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll take a look. :)
I'm slightly surprised, given the lack of enthusiasm certain major consumer ISPs have for it; mobile broadband perhaps?
Interestingly, part of the limiting factor may be non-IPv6 endpoints - my gateway had done roughly 60% v6 in the last 24 hours, despite being very much v6-first.
At least one of the largest ISPs here (Vermin— I mean Virgin Media) are still proudly beating their chest and saying they have ample v4 capacity to even have to consider v6.
For many ISPs I bet CGNAT is an easier option than v6 too. Zero changes needed on CPEs, just hand them out a 100.64.0.0/16 instead of their original IP. No changes in firewall configuration needed.
Most users don’t care about CGNAT. They just want Facebook and Xitter and TikTok to work.
@ret Plusnet have been saying "yeah we're working on it, Real Soon Now" for ... decades?
While I get that ultimately most end users don't care about the underlying tech, virtually all consumer-grade gear has coped with v6 for a *long* time, and I'd imagine ISP gear does by now too.
It irritates me how heavily my "legacy" stack still gets used - I should probably do some digging and work out who are the biggest luddites 😉
@ahnlak I saw yesterday that GitHub are still v4 only? So I guess it’s not always the people you think.
This is pretty good: https://whynoipv6.com/
Why No IPv6? The World's Largest Websites Lacking IPv6 Support
whynoipv6.com@ret yes, github is a perpetual pain in my neck - makes deploying v6-only servers a pain (or rather, it did before I transitioned all I could to my own Forgejo)
They're another outfit who have been "working on it" for decades /sigh
@ret @ahnlak and then you have people who should know better teaching networking to younger people, scoffing at IPv6 saying things along the lines of "just turn that off".
I saw an IP training video recently which did just that.
There is no such thing as having enough IPv4 addresses to not need IPv6.
No matter how many IPv4 addresses you have, that will not let you communicate with IPv6-only hosts.
