Latest reminder that if you buy something that the maker calls "smart" you are setting yourself up for being ripped off.
I go out of my way to avoid "smart" stuff -- but it's increasingly difficult to find.
Someone will make a lot of money when they open a store that sells things that purchasers fully own.

As a lifelong teacher, homework should be abolished.
At every grade level.
No research we have supports homework as being effective, and most of it (like teaching grammar) *ACTIVELY HARMS STUDENTS*.
(Except maybe some very mild homework in math and a couple of highly specific sciences).

“N95 Masks Nearly Perfect at Blocking COVID, UMD Study Shows … So-called ‘duckbill’ N95 masks scored highest in the study... The researchers also found that—in what might come as a surprise to many—cloth masks outperformed the specific brand of KN95 mask that was tested. Surgical masks brought up the rear in performance out of the four types, but even they blocked 70% of the virus, the tests showed. (To reflect the general public's use of masks, study volunteers were not fit-tested for their masks or trained how to properly wear them.)“

Thank you to Yale for publishing a wonderful handout with great graphics for the general public. This is one about asymptomatic infections that should be posted everywhere. https://pdflink.to/yale-covid-19-immune-system-impacts/. The dehumanization of the homeless has brought us to a point where existing without a home is now a criminalizable offense. That means poverty is being criminalized, public space is increasingly inaccessible, and existence is becoming harder for all of us. We have to resist, both in action and in shifting the paradigm away from the dehumanization of our fellow human beings who struggle in this capitalist world.

China? it's the whole USA credit system. it didn't exist in the US until Reganomics normalized that shit.
Puerto Rico had a law AGAINST credit scoring systems because they go back to Spanish slavery & the creation of plantation (company) towns post abolition.
sometime in the 1980s (aka Reagan-Bush) that all changed.
remember: Prescott Bush was a banker to the Nazis and Hitler's inner circle.

On its 50th birthday we might ask how successful has the Health & Safety at Work Act been?
well in 1969 there were 323,000 workplace deaths & injuries.... top from 168,000 ten years earlier.
In 1974, the there were 2.9 fatal injuries per 100,000 workers; by 2023-24, it was down to 0.42 per 100,000 representing 138 work-related deaths.
Now that looks like success.... not Health & Safety gone mad, but workers & their families saved from tragedies!
The Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 brought legislation to protect employees out of the Victorian age.The Conversation
@marjolica @johnflomax
I agree, the fact that much of UK’s heavy industry and mining has been wound down since the 70’s and outsourced to other countries does probably also play a part in the reduction of deaths.
To acknowledge the H&S risks that other country’s workers take to provide us with cheap goods, food and fuel should be acknowledged and steps taken to improve their workplaces too.
#Fairtrade should be valued by UK consumers.
@JugglingWithEggs @marjolica @johnflomax
That's really good point about the export of risk of worker injury & death.... he distancing of international markets makes us less aware of these dangers
found out another friend has Long COVID of the "full symptoms" variety that is not abating and has gone for 3 weeks so far.
fuck this society for convincing people COVID is no longer a problem. we are intentionally disabling people. #COVIDIsNotOver
Still thinking of the tidbit that the piece of popular wisdom that says human brains finish developing at 25…
… apparently comes from a study that found human brains were still developing at 25, but didn’t study people older than 25.

Me, replying to a facebook group where a local football club has been offered money for a mobile tower on its land. The land isn't "beautiful" so won't be spoiled. A win/win, right?
No, because unscientific cretins are claiming the usual old shit about "health effects of 5G" and are trying to get it stopped.
I've obviously left out "duty cycle", beam forming and such. But still. I really think people go "ooh tower, scary" and totally forget their HANDSET causes far higher dose.

One way sexism appears in the workplace is when maternity leave is considered some sort of holiday or break by male colleagues....
So, I love this graphic telling it how it really is (which is circulating on LinkedIn).
Next time, a colleague make the mistake of think maternity leave is a holiday, print this out & stick it on their desk.

I've noticed a big shift toward, "We should be teaching kids how to cite AI."
That's antithetical to citations. A citation points you to the original source. Citing AI is effectively erasing original sources in a misguided effort to "teach students how to responsibly use AI tools."
Responsible use is teaching people that AI tools are plagiarism machines. Period.
