She piloted her mecha back to base

Her friend stood guard at the gate

In armed and armoured power suit

Two angular metallic shapes

One huge, one large

In friendly conversation

A robot coming through the gate paused

Looked up at them

And saluted

They responded

And she asked

"Why?"

"We are all such beautiful machines."

While heat pumps are pretty rare in the UK (although getting much less rare thankfully!) we should introduce a fursuit subsidy. Get more fursuits out there so people can keep their heating lower and just make themselves fluffy to keep warm instead of burning gas. :]

Seconds from disaster!
Hyperious attempts to take flight with his DIY cardboard paragliding.
Nebstar can already tell this is going to end badly, but by the time he realizes what their otter friend is up to, it's too late.

He's okay! He survived! A few bandages and band-aids later, he’s back on his feet, making him to rethink...... his design and considering a bit more safety for next time.

Video Cassette Recorders generally sucked, unless you could afford U-Matic or better. But once we got Programme Direct Control working properly, they would generally record what you wanted and play it back when required.

That makes them significantly less annoying than the digital cable box that I have to have to get internet connectivity that records whatever the hell it feels like and constantly demands that it be fed ratings so that it can change what it records at random. Video tape at rest requires zero power. This thing needs power constantly so it can stay in contact with whichever massive data centre is destroying the climate to do what video tape did. What I don't know is the environmental impact of making magnetic tape, but this does not feel like an improveent.

The more I cook with chillis the more I wonder if the first humans to cultivate them actually ate them, or did they just use them to prank people? "You're from the other side of the mountain? In our village we have these tasty little red fruits. You should try one: they're delicious!" And then half an hour later when the visitor has finished dying, "Can I have some seeds to take back? "Don't worry," said the monster hunter. "Ain't no monster alive I can't track down and corner. I'll be back with its head-"

"No! You must not harm him!"

"No?"

"Just give him this envelope."

"What's in it?"

"Divorce papers."

only sometimes? 🦎

Most anatids (duck, goose family) regularly form homosexual pairings. I had a couple gay geese once.

Funny story. A woman down the road from the farm I lived at years ago bred and sold exotic fowl. A Christian woman bought a bunch of unsexed ducklings (i.e. the sex had not been determined, since it's invasive to do so in baby ducks), but later brought two gay male mallards back once they had grown up and their sex became clear because her religiousness couldn't countenance watching all that hot bareback drake-on-drake action in broad daylight. I mean, understandable. It says it right in the Bible.

always fun remembering how capitalism has "not helping people" as its main feature

doesn't matter how much people talk about charity or whatever

at the end of the day the main people who have the resources to do many things for others without risking their own life stability are the ones who already have lots of money to spare, which of course got there by not being interested in doing any of that

sirlan <( rawrr ) sharkey (AP)

even shit like economy of scale

if you want to be a fairphone or framework and make devices that are not made to be exploitative

well, you're a small company with a limited production, and making devices to be actually good costs, so you have to sell them at higher prices for less people

and the only way to have the economies of scale and be able to make devices that are accessible is by being a big company that makes exploitative devices and/or can tank selling things at a loss without going under

the system itself punishes good deeds for the masses, you either make something good and have it only be accessible to a few people who can pay up, or you are exploitative and have the capacity to make things accessible for more people

I find the very idea of "pair programming" to be horrifying. I would no more ask someone to share the act of coding than I would ask someone to share the act of taking a shit.

I worked as a debugger for a small company years ago; every programmer had the developer instance where they would do their bits and fixes and I was the one whose work was ensuring that their code behaved well with each other, I'll just say that I haven't worked as a programmer since then.

Local support life is far more rewarding and relaxing.

Rob Caporetto mastodon (AP)

When I first encountered it during Uni, there was something about it which made me feel that it was about creating replaceable coding cogs.

Having been forced to do it at jobs in the past - I'm certainly no fan, I find I learnt less from it than puzzling out a solution on my own.

Which is no surprise as a mere coding mortal!

A word of advice to red faced managers with an axe to grind: Do not tell me to 'use proper measures' when you mean 'do not use metric'. I have bigish library of engineering books dating back over one hundred years and you will get reports where I use Gunter's and Hamilton's chains interchangeably, I will use Chaldrons, pennyweights and Bavarian Lachters. I will take the trouble to work out every local midday and give you times based on what a sundial placed in the market square would read but leave calculation of all the offsets to you.

Further, I will use each unit as wrongly as possible. Expect international distances in nails and the sizes of bolts and nuts to be given in fractions of a nautical mile. I will convert things to tons of steam per 11 minutes and spend a long time giving you the specification for the steam in degrees RΓ©aumur.

I will use my Cobbett's and Dr. Johnson's and rewrite in mid-nineteenth century English.

If you are going to waste my time, I will be certain to waste yours.

Don’t forget that distance is defined by the speed of light, so it is perfectly correct to measure distances in light-seconds. A light-nanosecond is about 30 cm, so that’s a fairly useful replacement for a cubit or whatever.

I think the best and worst thing about fursuit heads is the resulting lack of any facial expressions. There are...advantages...to others not being able to see your face, sometimes, but it creates a layer of potential obfuscation, and moreso when you are interacting with another and can't see theirs.

During a dinner time at a Denny's restaurant, seeing those tempting crayons in the waiting area, ready to be taken and brought to the table, where I know a paper tablecloth awaits me with a blank canvas. Despite the limited colors, they put entertainment on the table while we wait for our food.

Why a badger? Because they're cute and I rarely get to draw one.

I will surely be displaying this (very valuable) piece at the MFF art show

I wonder if Valve will do anything interesting for the original Portal's 20 year anniversary in 2027.

I played the original Portal in autumn of last year and it was a really great game. @fleckenstein then insisted on buying me Portal 2 (don't ask me how I obtained the original), which was also really good. I really should replay them sometime and check out the full game mods people have made for the sequel. Because I don't think I can wait until 2027 for some more Portal.

A question for people: is Exascale any good, as a transit provider? I expect I know a few people who may have come across them and/or been a customer, so I may ask well ask!

My current main transit provider has provided me with notice that they are going to stop providing transit in a few months, and apparently they've given Exascale their customer list, because they phoned me a few days ago to offer their services. The prices seem reasonable (actually far lower than I was expecting, probably because I keep paying the same for year upon year without poking regularly for discounts, so I probably have way out of date pricing at the moment) and they seem to offer much higher CDRs for not much more money than I've been paying so far. The only downside is that they don't have <10Gbps ports in their network, so I'll probably have to have a router with an SFP+ socket in it at last!

I hesitate to just say "yes" without doing at least some kind of due diligence first, though, so: have you come across them before, and would you recommend? I probably ought to get at least one other quote too, so is there anyone else you'd recommend for (tier 2, for some reason I'm not keen on connecting directly with a tier 1) transit? Thanks :)

Well, I guess I can start to see why people don't like Netgear. I've never had any problem with them before, but then I've never really used their managed stuff. These "smart" switches are (a) tedious to configure through a pointy-clicky web interface (I've just sat here for ages adding all the vlans on my network, then clicking through every vlan in turn and individually adding each to all the trunk ports, urgh) and (b) stupid, in the sense that they point-blank refuse to have their management address in VLAN 2 even though I've turned off their "voice VLAN" feature and my network has run fine for 15 years with VLAN 2 as the management VLAN. I got these 48-port switches cheap and cheerful off ebay (Β£15 each, I think it was) and didn't think there was any way they could fail to be okay for standard RSTP, a bunch of VLANs, access ports and trunk ports, and pretty much no other requirements. Oh well. Nearly done setting up a fresh VLAN with a fresh set of firewalling specially for managing these stupid switches.
