Linux people, *please* understand this. Sometimes people need to run Windows.

They’re allowed to complain about Windows ads, or tracking, or any other enshittification problems, without you saying “use Linux” every time.

so true
gaming on linux is more viable than ever nowadays, but that doesn't change the fact that many anti-cheats have to specifically exclude linux because it'd just be impossible to actually secure the environment when the environment could be as simple as vanilla ubuntu and as complex and different as some person's hyper-customized NixOS install that they've been tweaking for 14 years
Roblox, Fortnite, Valorant and soon League of Legends, there's like a bunch of super popular games out there that straight up refuse to run on Linux because of that.
it's sucky but that's just how it ends up being sometimes, and apart from convincing the devs (which, unfortunately, usually can't happen) the only solution for someone who wants to play is either buy a Mac for like $1,200, or just dual-boot Windows for free...

We need to rapidly adopt a disaster management mindset vis-a-vis the climate crisis. Should the likes of James Hansen be correct, and I think he is, then catastrophic levels of warming are already locked in. And we are utterly unprepared for what's about to hit us. Elites' hubris re their dominion over nature shall ultimately be all our undoing, I fear

Here's a depressing Ontario thing: countdown to when our landfills are full (currently in 2033 but likely earlier) https://www.owma.org/cpages/home

Found it from this great @thenarwhal piece https://thenarwhal.ca/ontario-landfill-explainer/

Infuriating that businesses aren't playing by the same rules residential systems are. That should be the bare minimum.

GERMANY HAS PASSED SELF-ID LAWS!

The Federal Republic joins 20 countries which have passed laws allowing people to declare their own legal gender. I hope someday this will apply across the whole EU.

On a more personal level, this means I can finally change my own legal gender to #nonbinary 🎉🏳️‍⚧️

Spotted this by @Iris over on the ex-birdsite: "Catch-22 for women scientists: If your ideas are seen as coming from you, no-one likes the ideas. When the same ideas are disconnected from you, the ideas are liked, recognised as useful, and then taken without credit. This means the only way to have real impact is to be erased."

A key thing to do for allies is to not be complicit in such erasure but instead try to give credit where credit is due

You would think it was basic courtesy and honesty to acknowledge the ideas of others and apologise where you have made mistakes…I worked in academia over 2 decades and it was only in arts based subjects where I regularly witnessed this humanity, in maths based subjects (economics) it was incredibly rare…but I witnessed many men riding on their female partner’s coat tails.

For those of you wondering ... this is about a law that was passed yesterday in Germany to make it easier to change your legal gender to male, female or diverse (which includes inter, nb and agender people). :)
It used to be a long and costly process before.

Me: yes, it’s the park, the same place we’re going every time I drag you this way

Odin: I LOVE THE PARK

Every time I go to my local rubbish tip, a small part of me dies.

"I've got one bit of e-waste, this LED headlight has a bunch of electronics in it.

"No worries mate, just chuck that in the general waste."

😿

So, naturally, I brought it back home and stripped it down (1/2)

1 2
Gus mastodon (AP)

@jpm Not according to my tip guy!

(The worst thing is I think he figured he was doing me a favour by saving me the extra charge, as I had a ute full of other general waste - mostly pieces of car interior with no consumer recycling marks on the plastic. 😐)

George Haritonidis mastodon (AP)

@jpm Same thing happens at my tip. I went with about half a boot full of e-waste (mainly broken appliances accumulated over 10 years), the other half was general rubbish. I went to the general rubbish area and pulled the general rubbish stuff out, but couldn’t find the e-waste section. Found a worker there, asked him the question, response was “yeah just chuck it all in the general rubbish section”.

The marketing flyers from my council make it sound like this stuff gets sorted and disposed of responsibly, but the reality is that it all goes into the same hole in the ground. Very frustrating.

The Tories wants to criminalise carers who have the temerity of working in Tescos on the weekend and infringe their weekly earnings cliff edge by somewhere between 50p and £3.

These are people working very low paid jobs to keep the wolf from the door and have a chance to talk to other humans outside of their caring responsibilities.

Why is limit so low and always assumption of deceit?

Friend of mine is seriously (terminally) ill. His wife works max permitted hours on minimum wage in a care home, then comes home to work as her husband's carer. Around Christmas the care home was desperately short of staff and she was asked to stay on one evening for a couple of extra hours. Result, no carer's allowance that week. This policy is devastating to desperate people doing their best to hold things together.

Libraries are safe public spaces which you don’t have to pay to access. They spread knowledge and feed creative minds…they allow those without a computer to access the internet to find jobs and support.

They are also underfunded and underused by the wealthy elite.

This I’m sure is as true in the US as UK.

But what we don’t have yet is fascists removing books and spreading fear to rob people of their safe place.

think you’re barking up the right tree. Why should THEIR taxes pay for something for poor people?? Nothing can be for the benefit of society as a whole, has to be of benefit to them.
Juggling With Eggs mastodon (AP)

@luke

Under Cameron they tried to pitch this battle between the deserving and undeserving poor…which basically went along the lines of if you claim benefits to survive you must be out to con the system and if you work for slave wages, the government recognises your ‘right’ to hate all others ‘conning’ the system.

Disabled and their carers were thrown to the wolves…but also many others who don’t have ‘conventional’ Mail tick box lives.

But Tories really hate all poor.

@Luke
Is that because libraries have become the target of the far right? There's too much 'free thinkin' in libraries for their liking 🙄

windows 11 is putting ads in the start menu

no, not like, the preinstalled apps that windows 10 and 11 already have. literally just, advertisements

may i remind you that the expected, official way to obtain a legitimate official windows license is via an oem or paying microsoft $140 directly

i know you can buy shady keys online or pirate it trivially, but the EXPECTED METHOD of activating windows is either you or the oem pay microsoft for a license

despite that, ads. wow this is just cable tv!

Every time I do tech support for my family I get very angry about people who whine about lacking "tech literacy".

90% of the stuff I have to teach them is how to navigate manipulative software and dark patterns. This has nothing to do with tech, but with capitalism. Tech is not complicated, it is just made maximally confusing on purpose to remove agency.

Better tech ed won't fix this.

If you ever see a dress or a skirt or something and go "God, I wish I could wear that", just wear it. You can. Literally nobody is going to stop you.

One of the biggest things us transfemmes have to overcome is that voice in our heads telling us femininity is off-limits. Yes, sometimes the feeling really is the usual cis girl feeling of "I won't look good in that" but few people ever look as good as the models. 90% of the time, it's just internalized transphobia.

Just buy the damn skirt, girl. 💜

Great news coming from Germany: today, the Bundestag adopted the gender self-determination law, which will allow trans people to change their gender on their official papers with a simple declaration at the civil registry. Gone are the medical requirements. 🏳️‍⚧️

The law isn't perfect (a 3-month delay is to be observed before the change takes effect; minors will have to go through a dispute in court if their parents oppose the change), but it's still a huge step forward.

"I care not about her. But I'll do it for you."
