Corporate crime is notoriously underpoliced and underprosecuted. Mostly, that's because we just choose not to do anything about it. American corporations commit crimes at 20X the rate of real humans, and their crimes are far worse than any crime committed by a human, but they are almost never prosecuted:

This ruling shows how far removed judges are from modern day life and human error with online systems.

The decision does nothing to uphold the law or give meaning to the institution of marriage being decided by consenting adults.

A system that doesn't allow for humans to make mistakes is just broken. Humans make mistakes. There will always be occasional mistakes, and any working system must provide a way to rectify them.

I grew up around individuals who always demonized the liberal and creative arts. I followed closely in their footsteps - initially, into my college years. But I always had a bit of a creative flair, but it was always smushed into a “How can this be used at work/business?” mold.

Eventually as I met more people I began to appreciate writers, artists, creative people. These were people who “Didn’t contribute anything” but often they actually contributed a LOT. Many make life worth living.

:boosts_ok_gay: Quick reminder - we host a fast local (Central US/Austin) Masto instance with a bunch of cool geeky furs - Tiggi.es is open for registrations (and not only for tigs) and we’ve increased our media cache size due to a brand new server installation. We’re a 100% enterprise NVMe SSD instance :)

We also host a Masto Relay at https://relay.tiggi.es and a PixelFed (Fedi Instagram) instance at https://pixel.tiggi.es that has several slots left open.

We don’t ask for donations to keep us running, only that folks contribute what they can to animal rescues or sanctuaries. Burrs appreciate ya!

Please boost. :)

The fact that every mainstream news site is now locked behind a paywall is a real boon for the spread of misinformation, because very few right wing sites have paywalls — which means their disinfo and propaganda can spread much more easily. Paywalls are a slow motion disaster.

this past Saturday night, a Dutch train conductor was punched and knocked down the stairs by a rowdy passenger, and so this coming Saturday night, they’re gonna throw the brakes on the entire national train system for a few minutes to give everyone an earful about respect and safety. I’m bringing this up because I feel like no American institution would do that because one of their employees got decked by a customer.

So, Microsoft is silently installing Copilot onto Windows Server 2022 systems and this is a disaster.

How can you push a tool that siphons data to a third party onto a security-critical system?

What privileges does it have upon install? Who thought this is a good idea? And most importantly, who needs this?

An autistic woman sees a news item on TV about the awful events at Bondi Junction yesterday. She sees the floral tributes, and wishes that such tributes weren’t wrapped in plastic, tied with ribbons etc, because then, when it was time, they could be swept up & composted.

That sounds totally lacking in empathy right? Why else would she be thinking about such trivial details?

I’ll tell you why. It’s because she is so distressed by the event, the fear suffered by victims at the time & since by those who survived & others who witnessed it, the loss of innocence experienced by those who have never before been so close to such an awful event, the grief suffered by those who have lost loved ones, that focussing on a practical, logistical issue is a way for her to avoid being overwhelmed by such feelings.

The next time anyone tells you that autistic people aren’t empathetic, tell them that empathy isn’t about how people look or behave, it’s about how they feel. Some autistic people are very much out of touch with their feelings, & find them very difficult to identify & articulate. Their feelings are buried very deeply within them. Some are hyper-sensitive to the suffering of others, which might be seen as being overly dramatic & making an event all about them. And the others are somewhere in between.

The fact that a person doesn’t express their feelings, or express them the way you might expect, does not mean that those feelings aren’t there.

Or with the civilized world encouraging Putin by deciding to do fuck all when he invaded Crimea - had there been a different decision then neither of the others would have happened.
David John Crook mastodon (AP)
This depends upon your definition of war. It feels to me in the UK that Putin has been at war, destabilising democratic nations with considerable success since 2016, with Brexit and Trump. Maybe it started in Crimea in 2014, because the lack of reaction emboldened him. Your world view probably gives different answers, but I see Putin as the catalyst.

I'm very tired of the phrase "if you aren't paying for the product, you are the product".

Because of how many people don't seem to realize that often if you ARE paying for the product, you are still the product. Do you think paying for Youtube Premium means you stopped being the product? Paying for a product doesn't mean you're suddenly respected as a customer. These days usually you're just the product but paying for the privilege.

Scrolling through furry social media now, I feel more & more like an outsider, but I think maybe I was always more of an outsider than I wanted to feel. Maybe a lot of us are.

Getting older changes you & how you feel, what your priorities are. I am slowing down and I need to embrace who I am and those who have embraced me most.

Sometimes the next stage of your life starts with no warning or preperation.

I still wish you guys all the best. Hope I made you smile a few times.

Love to you all.

Everyone at every stage of life has a period where they feel like an outsider. Social media is a destructive weapon for making us feel alone, isolated, or out of touch, particularly as we get older. Don't let it tell you the lie that you're not valued, or that you can't have community anymore. You absolutely can. ❤

One of my larger complaints about Linux Foundation events is that they are very much targeted at corporations with large budgets to send people to conferences.

For example, as someone who has mostly been an indie OSS maintainer over their career, I would love to go to Open Source Summit and meet up with people to discuss what problems they are having with the software I maintain and how we can collaborate on resolving those problems.

But my choices are to register as a "hobbyist" (a frankly demeaning thing to call an indie maintainer) at $249, which requires me to go ask them for a discount code (also frankly demeaning), or register at the full $949 rate, or maybe I could get the "small business" discount code which brings it down to *only* $500. Man, what a favor, huh?

I understand that putting on these events is very costly, but when indie OSS maintainers are given the option of paying nearly $1000 or having to go ask someone for a "hobbyist" discount code, it seems very disrespectful to the maintainers who are building the actual software that this summit is about.

Do you really think the guy in Nebraska who is holding up all modern digital infrastructure in his spare time has the money to spend $949 to go to a conference? For all the talking we do about building inclusive conferences, this has to include *access* for indie maintainers.

This month, Dictionary.com laid off all of its lexicographers, presumably on the assumption that English is complete.

Let’s invent a neologism to describe this absurd hubris, and spread it widely so that every dictionary except Dictionary.com includes it.
