I've always had this slight background annoyance that whenever someone in a story is shown doing "science", they actually aren't. Usually what they're really doing is invention, or engineering, or just something to do with technology generally, but it's almost never simply discovering things about how the universe works, which is what actual science is.

"Rishi Sunak calls for end to ‘sick note culture’ as he unveils benefits system shakeup"

A critical part of Conservative thinking is the absolute certain belief that most people are on-the-take chancers trying to dodge gainful employment at any cost

⚠️ It's a trap ⚠️ (please boost for reach)

I was just informed that the Guardian is prepping to do a story on DIY HRT and is looking to interview trans folk, particularly teens.

The story will almost certainly be weaponized by conservatives to argue for removing access to the necessary materials.

Just like with the police, anything you say can and will be used against you by mainstream media.

Be safe out there fam :heart_trans: :Blobhaj_Hug:

Here you go, @neilhimself a little chrome extension I wrote that does just that. It's an excellent reminder.

Is it extremely petty to set a calendar reminder for one year out, just to prove that you were right about a crypto-based domain name system being useless grift?

Yes.

Did I still do it?

Y… yes

You know, the old sayings often capture very succinctly even modern problems.

For example, take the phrase 'Maybe all I really need is five hundred million pounds'. It was true when it was first uttered and it's still very true now.

#ClimateDiary It seems, IS, utterly crazy, that amidst everything else the UK government is ruthlessly continuing its clampdown on climate protesters. But it is.

Excellent article by Natasha Walter here on how Dr Sarah Benn got 30 days in prison for holding up a placard saying “Stop New Oil” and overall recent developments:

“the direction of travel is fast and frightening and its repercussions are growing.”

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/apr/13/climate-crisis-protest-activism-repression

1 1

#ClimateDiary and now Dr Benn has also been found guilty of professional msiconduct, by a Medical Practitioners Tribunal. This is deeply wrong. Holding up a sign and protesting - for planetary, human health! - does not constitute medical misconduct. I hope many #doctors will speak up against this. #NHS #JustStopOil #ExtinctionRebellion

Hugh Grant has been priced out of his ‘phone hacking’ lawsuit against The Sun, after learning it would cost him more money to win than it would cost Rupert Murdoch.

To decipher this post.

The damages from carbon fueled climate change ALREADY costing more than building New Energy to end carbon.

Canada in one year above billions in other climate damage lost 30 billion trees

30 billion trees, the Canadian #Climate Wildfire Catastrophe🇨🇦🔥🚨in 2023, is more trees than would be cut in three centuries of logging. Canada isnt 200 years old. Paris east to Bonn Germany, down deep into the Alps, across west to Lyon in France. All burned into the soil

Yet another massive subsidy to the oil and gas industry, the richest, most profit-making industry ever. A gift from Canadian taxpayers to Big Oil.

We have started to see scans/exploits from multiple IPs for CVE-2024-3273 (vulnerability in end of life D-Link Network Area Storage devices). This involves chaining of a backdoor & command injection to achieve RCE.

D-Link announcement: https://supportannouncement.us.dlink.com/security/publication.aspx?name=SAP10383

Exploit & PoC details are public. As there is no patch for this vulnerability, these devices should be taken offline/replaced or at least have their remote access firewalled.

We are sharing IP data on exposed devices in our Device Identification report: https://shadowserver.org/what-we-do/network-reporting/device-identification-report/

Really important stuff, put extremely well.

“Last year, I had a life-changing experience at 90 years old. I went to space, after decades of playing an iconic science-fiction character who was exploring the universe. I thought I would experience a deep connection with the immensity around us, a deep call for endless exploration.
"I was absolutely wrong. The strongest feeling, that dominated everything else by far, was the deepest grief that I had ever experienced.
"I understood, in the clearest possible way, that we were living on a tiny oasis of life, surrounded by an immensity of death. I didn’t see infinite possibilities of worlds to explore, adventures to have, or living creatures to connect with. I saw the deepest darkness I could have ever imagined, contrasting so starkly with the welcoming warmth of our nurturing home planet.
"This was an immensely powerful awakening for me. It filled me with sadness. I realized that we had spent decades, if not centuries, being obsessed with looking away, with looking outside. I did my share in popularizing the idea that space was the final frontier. But I had to get to space to understand that Earth is and will stay our only home. And that we have been ravaging it, relentlessly, making it uninhabitable."

Had a client tell my boss yesterday that I need to dress “more professionally” when in their office. It reignited how much I hate being told to “dress different” because that’s almost always a poor mask for saying “dress more normal” => “dress less queer”.

I was dressed well in clean, well kept clothes. This person, who is our main contact at the company, gave me the up-and-down look when I showed up wearing a nice hoodie and shorts and my bomber jacket.

When someone has issues with clothes that just don’t look the way they want, I can and will assume it’s always rooted in classism or not wanting queer looking people in their office space. What makes what I’m wearing inherently less professional than what you’re wearing? Old dress standards rooted in generations’ old desire to not look like the blue collar professionals that you employ? Fuck you, take a hike. I dress how I dress and you’re not gonna change that.

Pretty pissed at my manager for not standing up for me too.

I’m hoping this just results in them not sending me to the site in the future and instead sending one of our three other techs.

In high school, in my class at least, some kids got really creative about getting around dress code. No more graphic ties? Get wilder patterns. Then would get unique mono-color pants (lavender, green, yellows, etc) and even a square color paneled one. We all were gonna find our way to be unique and expressive despite the dress code and we did
