One use of AI assistant tools is as a souped-up search engine: you ask a question in natural language, and you hope that it will understand its data well enough to pick out the page that really answers your question, instead of pages that just mention some of the keywords. And you usually hope in vain.

So we should re-expand the acronym: these are 'Awkward Indexing' assistants.

Do you ever struggle with getting bored with some routines.

Oh I wish. ;)
At work I can't settle into routines because I can't adjust when people interrupt me.
At home I still have gaping holes in my routines. While my morning routine is thankfully settled pretty much down to the minute, whatever I do after work is usually accompanied by the strong feeling "I should be doing something else instead" (the joy of executive dysfunction).
For whatever routines I do have, small variations are enough to keep me from getting bored.

I really want someone to tell me, explain it to me like you would a child, how can America claim to be so star spangle awesome -- Because as an American, I do not believe we are.

Do not misunderstand. I do not expect any place on earth to be perfect, as it is an imperfect world. And I am not trying to "hate on" my country, because, sure we have our flaws, same as every place does. But for crying out loud, we as a nation have gone insane, and truly lost our way.

Europe has healthcare and better privacy rights, civil rights, employment, pay, benefits, and here we have criminals, Donald Trump, for example, who can attempt to overthrow the government and break just about every law and court order, without care. On top of this, The Supreme Court is deciding whether you can jail homeless, for sleeping anywhere except a home, which they do not have (because they're homeless). Effectively, criminalizing homelessness.

On that note, we have more homes in America than we have people. We could house a nation twice the size of the American population and still have room to spare. Yet, so many people cannot afford a house, working 1-3 full-time jobs, even with excellent credit.

On that note, we have the ultra wealthy who avoid paying taxes at every turn, whose bank accounts in some instances match the GDP of some nations around the world. But we still insist on giving these people tax breaks, assuming they pay any (as some don't), while our elected officials proclaim how we have no money for things that help people, but always finds extra cash for things that do not.

When you say, we're number one, I really do not know what the f-ck you're all talking about. I really do not, and I think you have your head up your backside. Because education, healthcare, civil rights, justice, and just about everything else here in the United States of America seems to be on decline.

NASA recovered a space probe's 47-year-old computer with about as much memory as my old Commodore 64 over a distance of 15 billion miles so it can (hopefully) continue to do science work, and it reminds me of how much ingenuity used to go into computers back when the assumption was you couldn't consume the water and electricity of a small nation just to power Ask Jeeves.

Dear @rowyn,
I just finished The Princess, Her Dragon, and Their Prince. It was amazingly sweet. I adored the characters to bits and finished the story happy with the ending yet sad to leave. This is a great example of positive polyamorous representation and I will be reading the rest of your work.

Dear Everyone Else, buy this charming triad romance fantasy here:

#ClimateDiary 13yo asked me just now: why does noone care about climate change anymore?

They watched this Prince Ea poem, “Sorry” at school last week, and apparently everyone just laughed, nobody cared.

It is very good but it does feel like from a different era - 2024 really does feel different to 2015-20. Not for everyone, of course, but the climate momentum just isn’t there just now. Hope it takes off again soon and that this time it really does change things.

This is a really salient point that I don't hear a lot of people making. My wife teaches high school, and anecdotally, a couple years ago she would always say that the kids didn't question climate change at all. They all understood. Now they often say it doesn't exist, or it's a hoax. She went from being optimistic about "the kids" to totally dismayed.

Last November, NASA's Voyager 1 sent home garbled data, and engineers traced the problem to the flight data subsystem (FDS). The problem turned out to be a single chip in the FDS memory. They couldn't repair the chip but could move the affected code into sections and store them in different parts of the FDS system. They tested the new system this week, sending signals to the Voyager 1, 22.5 light-hours away. It worked, and Voyager 1 is back.

The #UK government has reclassified nearly £500m of aid for war-torn and impoverished countries as “climate finance”, in a bid to meet its international commitments under the Paris Agreement.

This follows reports that the UK’s pledge to spend £11.6bn on climate aid is slipping out of reach.

Humanitarian work in nations including Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia is now being double-counted as climate finance to help the UK hit its goal. #ClimateChange

Who killed Britain?
This Danish article has the correct answer: Thatcher.

"Around two-thirds of Britons believe the country is in decline, and it's not hard to see why. Real wages are lower than 15 years ago. A third of British children grow up in poverty, many millions have to skip meals every single week. The UK is not just significantly poorer than France, let alone Germany or Denmark. The poorest 10% of Britons now also earn less than the poorest 10% in Slovenia...

"A particular story of decay still plagues the country... and it goes something like this: the 1960s and 70s were a dark time... Then Thatcher came and saved it all with economic common sense, tax cuts and a necessary showdown with unions... But that narrative is fundamentally wrong... Margaret Thatcher did not increase the growth of the British economy... The post-war period, including the 1970s, was the time of high growth and major transformations... an economic model reminiscent of the one found in the rest of Western Europe was established... In the 1980s many countries lowered taxes, removed regulation, encouraged deindustrialization and privatized public enterprises. But Britain took exceptionally radical action. Today, it is Europe's most financialized economy, with very high inequality - and a very low level of both public and private investment in the economy.

"Four criminal acts have destroyed the economy.... Monetarism in the 1980s, deregulation in the 80s, the austerity policy of the 2010s and Brexit. All motivated by the same economic thinking... free market fundamentalism."
