Itโ€™s a detail that none of us wants to think aboutโ€ฆwhat will happen to our children and dependents after we die.

I remember making a #will before my kids were born and addressing the details felt grim even then.

But what if you have children with #SpecialNeeds? It turns out you need specialist advice, a standard will wonโ€™t help, it could make your childโ€™s life far worse.

Worth reading.

I felt that, especially the "torture" bit. I get told to do something, and I end up struggling to even do it in the first place

Here's some incorrect advice being given out by Forbes magazine about announcing price increases. Contrary to the nonsense stated here, actually using straightforward terms and owning the price increase makes the customer feel like the company is being honest, whereas using weaselly neutral language makes the customer feel like the company is being evasive, cowardly and dishonest.
1 1
Mrs Beanbag mastodon (AP)
why would a price increase make a customer think they were being overcharged previously? that doesn't even make any sense.

"Lesbians have a strong history of supporting more marginalised parts of the community. We were there for gay men during the โ€˜80s and โ€˜90s when prejudice around AIDs and HIV was at a peak. So why would we not be there for the trans community, especially when they face a similar barrage of online hate, often founded on fiction rather than facts?"

Tracks. I've met gay guys with pretty awful opinions about trans people, but I've yet to meet a lesbian with similar opinions.

Selection bias (for the set of "people I've met") definitely applies here - so take this with a grain of salt. Equally I'm up for meeting new people ... just not necessarily ones whose world view boils down to "this group of people I hate should be dead".

edit: A friend just messaged me to say "yeah I've met a couple but they're really rare"

And that's really the crux of the matter to me: trans rights boils down to "everyone has a right to life and liberty"
(if there's an ethics professor in the audience who wants to poke holes in my world view and personal ethics - go for it, just cite your sources.. sometimes it's nice to have my views challenged because I've come out the other end with a better understanding of the world and myself).

Some time last year, someone screen-shared a VSCode editing session with me, and I noticed it was highlighting brackets in source code in different colours according to their nesting level mod 3, so that it was easier to see which ones matched which.

That wasn't enough by a long way to make me switch editor from #emacs, but it seemed like a cool feature, and I occasionally thought about it wistfully.

Last week I mentioned it in passing to a friend, who said "Oh, in vim that feature is called 'rainbow brackets'". Then suddenly it was easy to find implementations for emacs too. I tried out https://github.com/Fanael/rainbow-delimiters the next day to see if I'd _really_ like it. After a few days, it's clear I'm going to keep it (after reconfiguring it so I can actually see the difference).

Knowing the right search term is everything!

I tend to de-colorize modes (I keep a few things like strings around, because I'm always forgetting to close the quotes). But I've never really needed more than blink-matching-open to remind me. I tend to keep code segments short, so that does the trick. I will say, however, that for Lisp code (and Tcl), it can be hard to know if you've added "enough" close-parens to do the right thing.

This is part of why I've started leaning so heavily away from things where the primary motivation for them is making money.

The wizard finished the incantation, and the demon appeared in the sigil.

"Let us continue."

"Do you really not have any friends who could help," the demon asked

"I cannot show weakness."

"You'd show strength."

"Quiet!"

The demon sat, muttering "I can't wait for the invention of therapists."

I just need to get a USB power supply (10W is probably plenty) with a 3 metre cable ending in a type C connector, for reasonable money and without going crawling back to bloody Amazon. It's just so hard to find stuff, for items like this where there's so many cheap crap versions of it around, that is likely to be of decent quality, without resorting to ludicrously expensive high-end-branded stuff. My usual method of avoiding Amazon is ebay but for this particular search it's full of so much questionable junk it's hard to find anything that's likely to be worth buying.
1
Pippin friendica

@TheDragon ๐Ÿ”ฅ I've successfully avoided Amazon since January 2020. It's not as convenient as getting everything very fast from one place but I've found plenty of other places to get things from.

I'm finding that just about any place that has a "marketplace", where third parties can sell their own stuff through what looks like a single vendor, seems to get stuffed with crap very quickly, some of which doesn't even exist and others are cheap rubbish. Sometimes they use tricks of the platform to make themselves look cheaper/better than they are, like for example I've been seeing stuff on ebay where there are options for size/colour/etc, they'll add something like a "SIM eject tool", about the cheapest tool possible, as one of the "size" options just so that they get listed first when you sort by price.

I can only imagine when they figure out how to use generative models to produce listings (or do a better job of it than now) we'll find ourselves even less able to actually locate anything worthwhile.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll take a look. :)

I have 2 close friends (one of whom wrote the letter) and a trusted acquaintance from my activist circles who all work part time, but rely on PIP to do so. None of them will now be eligible for it or the benefits that arise from being eligible for PIP.

In each case medical consultants have said they are not able to carry out full time workโ€ฆit would damage their health and one has been told explicitly it would put them in hospital. NHS will be hit badly by this cruelty
