After a full day of bird camera installations, it is time for the dark side. Wait no, the purple side. #MayThe4thBeWithYou

Its been clear for ages that many public service cuts are false economies.... as a friend of mine pointed out some time ago, if you cut early intervention & prevention services (which can be relatively cheap & effective), you then enlarge the demand for more expensive (and often mandatory) crisis services....
A new IFS study that looked at closing police stations, suggests, likewise that every £1 saved by closing a location increased social costs by £3!
New research has found that every pound saved in closing police stations costs the rest of us £3Torsten Bell (The Guardian)
Japanese language lesson today told me about how to receive a compliment.
(You downplay the compliment given to you.)
If someone says, “You’re good at this, aren’t you?” you respond, “No, I’m not good.”
This is a very funny part of language to me, because though it may be a cultural norm, it feels wrong to me to dismiss the thing someone said about you. I feel like the “nicer” response for everyone (including yourself) is to thank them for saying that about you.
Not mine, but:
The sport of choice for the urban poor is basketball.
For maintenance workers it's bowling.
For line workers it's football.
For supervisors it's baseball.
For middle management, tennis.
And for corporate executives it's golf.
The fact is, the higher you go in corporate structure, the smaller your balls become.
"Virtually every major wave of campus protests in the past sixty or so years has been met with condemnation by established elites. And virtually all--civil rights, anti-war, anti-apartheid--over the decades have proven the protestors to be on the right side of history."

I've spent the week reading like 50+ papers on learning to remember what I know about how people learn and this is what I know:
-people are bad at deciding what to learn
-people are bad at studying. We choose the worst ways to study and we hate the most efficient ways
-people give up on learning so much. Like more than anyone believes
-people aren't clear about what their goals really are for learning and if you try to get people to set goals they don't want to
-teachers truly work miracles

Labour’s Richard Parker beat Conservative Andy Street by 1,508 votes to become mayor of the West Midlands.
#Sunak your government is dead in the water. Call a general election now and get trounced or call one this autumn and get wiped out completely after a summer of further chaos, lies and incompetence at your hands.
Real thought:
What depresses me most about the state of the world at present is that we've stopped caring to live up to the spirit of our ideals.
When we fail them and are pressed, we can rationalize our terrible actions based on technicalities - and large swaths of our culture have normalized doing this very thing.
It is my most sincere hope that we can walk our way back from this. I see some signs of this, but would prefer to see many more.

I love Minecraft: Java Edition, because I can simply install Fabric and mod away anything I don't like, hehe.
Mojang makes a decision that the playerbase dislikes, and the modders jump on reversing it.

The linked document is being circulated amongst NHS service providers for young trans people. It advises cessation of ALL medical intervention for transition but goes further. It suggests that if the patient or parents continue to access trans healthcare outside their system, they should be reported to social services with the implicit threat that the children will be taken from their parents.
IF YOU ARE A YOUNG TRANS PERSON OR A PARENT OF ONE, IT IS LIKELY UNSAFE TO ENGAGE WITH NHS MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.
