Well, I had to wait quite a while for it, but I finally got something I've wanted for..well, whether consciously or not, at least 20-23 years.

We need a different word for "old computer parts" and "parts for old computers". People use "retro" for both.
Like a Packard Bell 486 is the former: it was made in the 90s.
And a PicoGUS is the later: it's an ISA card that can be used in computers from the 90s, but it was made recently.
I was interested by the crackdown described here and decided to see what would happen if I deleted a few old questions. Weโre talking four questions, 10+ years old, of questionable current relevance. Some I could not delete and so I recommended them for closing on the basis of their age. Sure enough, I got a 24-hour ban with a nasty message from the site, and got the dunce cap โDisciplinedโ added to my profile.
I was never a power user on #stackoverflow in the first place, and nobody was looking to me for advice, but this was enough to prompt me to delete my account. Iโm not interested in having my name associated with this kind of organization. Frankly, Iโm also not a strong enough #rstats programmer to take the risk of getting coding advice from AI: if itโs badly wrong, which tends to happen at least in other domains โ rarely enough that people let down their guard, but often enough to be nonignorable โ I might not know. So the value proposition of using their site is not what it was before, and thereโs really no reason for me to stay.
Been struggling to write for weeks ...
On a whim I grabbed my laptop and sat in my room with the lights off, making it almost pitch black. Ended up writing 500 words in a half hour ๐คฃ
Does being in a dark room literally help creativity or something?
I once told my computer science PhD supervisor I didn't know what an array was. It turned out he'd just pronounced it *ever* so slightly differently (I think he put the stress on the first syllable instead of the second) and that was enough that I hadn't recognised the word and couldn't figure out what he was talking about! (Actually I do know what arrays areโฆ!)
tech job hiring standards: don't bother unless you know our whole stack, can compile at least 3 languages with your mind, got a masters from mit And uc berkeley, and wrote at least one package that is in use in our dev pipeline
tech job anecdotes i have heard from my friends: i had a coworker once who didn't know how to use a for loop
I'm not at #RSAC this year. Faculty don't have expense accounts and it has become too expensive to pay out of pocket.
However, I tried to recreate aspects of it at home:
* I got some T-shirts and socks I will only wear once
* I paid way too much for several meals
* I had some undergrads explain cyber concepts to me incorrectly but with enthusiasm; I had some lie to me for extra verisimilitude
1/2
* I watched videos of former celebrities talking about something they didn't understand but played a movie role about decades ago
* I walked several miles back and forth without seeing anything really interesting
* I got my email address added to about 50 spam lists
The only things I didn't do was spend $3000+ and see some old friends. That last bit is the only thing I regret.

The Fediverse is deliberately spread out on thousands of independent servers running many types of software, which connect together to form a single social network.
But why is it like this? Why go to all this trouble? Wouldn't a single large server be easier?
Here is a complete list of reasons why it is very important for a social network to be spread out on many independent servers:

Actually, i would pay for an developer to build a bridge to make this happen
Bluesky isn't really part of the Fediverse. It's structured to be built around content feeds run by massive corporations, which they intend to insert adverts on at some point.
The people in charge of Bluesky are backed by VC money, which inevitably leads to these kinds of shenanigans down the line. (Here's an example of something similar: https://waxy.org/2024/01/the-quiet-death-of-ellos-big-dreams/)
Ello launched in 2014 with big dreams, but the artsy social network suddenly shut down last year, deleting nine years of posts without warning. What happened?Andy Baio (Waxy.org)

"Some overseas providers may block access to their platforms from the UK rather than comply with these stringent measures."
ORG responds to Ofcom proposals on age-gating online content, which could see platforms simply electing to avoid the additional costs.

So, I have to admit I was kind of interested in doing this.
1) Anyone interested in running with me?
2) If I do register, will you donate?
people: its like im sick all the time now. i would give anything to make it stop
me: you could wear a mask
people: no not like that
Hard to imagine a signal that a website is a rugpull more intense than banning users for trying to delete their own posts
Like just incredible "burning the future to power the present" energy here
Earlier today I edited my (small) set of Stack Overflow posts to add the sentence "I do not consent to my words being used to train OpenAI" to the end. Within hours, all these edits were reversed and I got a warning email for "removing or defacing content". I did not remove any content. If this small sentence is "defacing", it is a very minor defacement. In no way was the experience of other users made worse by me adding one sentence.
To Stack Overflow, you are not a person. You are "content".

โIf you're not paying for it, you're the product, except that if you are paying for it, youโre potentially still the product, unless the software in question is Free software, in which case youโre probably not the product even if you are not paying for it, but you should be trying to pay for it anyway if you can to support the developersโ.
Simples.
