Talked to a very smart person this afternoon who reminded me: climate fatalism ("it's too late") is a soft form of denialism.

Everything we do from here is worthwhile. It counts, it makes a difference. No matter what damage has been done, we can still make things better than if we had done nothing. We can still look after the world, look after our friends and family. Action has results.

Deciding it’s too late to do anything about #ClimateBreakdown, you are giving yourself permission to do nothing about the situation…hence denialism.

But how does it make you feel driving a diesel car everyday, sat in traffic, wearing your disposable fast fashion, heating your home with fossil fuels, buying plastic crap that will soon be in landfill.

If you believe in climate change, you feel personal guilt. Better mentally to do something and persuade others.

50 billionaire families have already spent $600 million on the 2024 elections.

More than half—$416 million—went to Republicans or conservative groups that want to extend Trump's tax cuts for the rich.

Could there be a clearer example of how big money corrupts our democracy?

The 'godfather of AI' says the government will have to establish UBI to deal with the impact of AI on inequality.

"I was consulted by people in Downing Street and I advised them that universal basic income was a good idea."

He thinks that AI will increase productivity and wealth, but that the money will go to the rich and not the people whose jobs get lost and that’s "going to be very bad for society."

if you hate google's shitty ai web search changes and you've been wanting to try a new search engine out... how about all of them at once???

#searxng is a free internet metasearch engine which aggregates results from 70+ search services, and you can run it yourself! there are a TON of instances and it's engineered to respect your privacy and hide your search history!

you can use an instance listed at https://searx.space or use one that i run, https://search.birdcat.cafe ! i have been using it for months now and i don't see myself going back to other search engines :3

What has your experience been thus far? I definitely wanna avoid search engines that have AI at the helm.

However, since Searx looks at many of the search engines to form it's own results... how will a Searx instance perform since the large search engines are already favoring pages/sites that have LLM generated content?

I don't mean to be combative in this questioning. I just wonder how fucked the Internet (at large) is just from the prioritization of LLM generated website/website content in search results.

I've had pretty good luck with getting results out of searx instances, but you're right that modern search has degraded to include a lot of AI search results. From my use however searx seems to find and correlate other searches that it finds that appears in multiple engines and presents that to you first instead of blindly depending on just Google or something.

I feel the same way about AI that I did about crypto when it started becoming a thing:

• All of the moral practices that make it possible are fucked beyond repair.

• It’s spawning some of the worst companies, and enriching some of the worst billionaires in the world.

• While there are some genuinely useful, practical applications for it, there are so few of them, and they have had so little positive impact so far, that it doesn’t even seem like it’s going to be worth it anytime soon.

“By the end of the century people may well be 50% poorer than they would’ve been if it wasn’t for climate change,” said Harvard economist Adrien Bilal.
“I think everyone could imagine what they would do with an income that is twice as large as it is now. It would change people’s lives.”
Bilal said that purchasing power, which is how much people are able to buy with their money, would already be 37% higher than it is now without global heating seen over the past 50 years.

LB: It's hard to believe same-sex marriage only first became legal anywhere in the United States twenty years ago today. It would take another 11 years for it to become the law of the land.

There are still those who want roll back those rights (see also: Project 2025). It's exhausting and unthinkable that we have to keep fighting this fight, but it is absolutely worth it.

People are all just people, right? When it gets down to it, everyone's the same. They love something. They want something. They fear something. Specifics help, but specifics don't change the way that everyone is vulnerable. It just changes the way that we access those vulnerabilities.
