And here's my occasional Fedi outreach about my dream retrocomputer - does anyone have a Sun Ultra 45 they are willing to part with? I'm just a sad, pathetic person living in Arctic Sweden who has been trying for more than two decades (!!) to get his hands on one.
Boosts are definitely love.

Back when they started, I actually hosted (for free) a mirror of their download site for a while. I don't remember receiving even a thank you. 🤷♂️
I also bought a Pi back when they were brand new. I think I missed the first batch, but got one of the second batch. I did try it out, booted it to a desktop, connected to our living room TV. Then I put it in a drawer and haven't used it again.
WELP THAT'S THE END OF THAT I'M DONE!
Raspberry Pi is now a publicly traded company. The #enshittificaton can only vastly accelerate at this point.
All right, Chooms, time to find alternatives!
After some conversations with friends NOT on the fediverse I've arrived at calling it "independent social media."
This is better than "open source" or other titles, it better conveys the central difference.
[Why is the solution to poverty and other social lack-of-wealth issues enabling the wealthy to get more money?]
Because that gives enriched rich people an incentive to fund campaigns? 🤔

What repeated #COVID19 infections are doing to us:
On the left is data from the UK showing the number of people economically inactive due to long-term sickness. It fell for two decades and has exploded to record levels since the pandemic.
On the right is the US civilian labor force with a disability. It stayed steady for two decades and has exploded to record levels since the pandemic.
Both are at their record highs, and both still trend up. We're done with COVID, but it's not done with us.
As someone who works in tech, I'm honestly tired of hearing about the same few topics from the same companies:
1. Layoffs
2. Return to office (see #1)
3. Record-breaking profits
4. Press releases about large language models
Shut up shut up shut the FUCK up
@Devourer_ITA What's extra stupid is if you have a Pixel device, and you use the keyboard to do transcription, you'll notice that the Google colors end up around the microphone when you use the gboard to do it. If you don't have a pixel device, it probably never has that.
The reason it's doing that is to indicate that it's actually doing on-device transcription. If for whatever reason transcription can't behave correctly it will end up showing it without that. Like if it can't initialize the TPU.
That's my understanding at least, and part of why the transcription on it is so fast.
It does the same thing for when you do live captions mode or for the "screen/direct my call" feature when you don't have Fi as your carrier.
There is enormous potential for on-device transcription models, but those always end up being the ones that never get a ton of fanfare even though they are ostensibly the most useful.
Ooh. 4 ft something, here I come.
Hmm, maybe we can incorporate these into small cakes or drinks and label them "eat me" and "drink me".

During an outing to have dinner at 23:00, when there are not many options around but Denny's, and they have at the entrance a box full with crayons, making every disposable paper tablecloth a canvas. This time they were special tablecloths, they were not showing a Denny's menu or anything like that, it was during Mexican elections day so these have a reminder about voting.
I've had otters on my mind lately, so why not to draw one. With very restricted palette of colors (blue, orange, red and green), very easy to break.
Traditional. Super cheap crayons.
I'm also gonna display this one at the Anthrocon's Art Show because why not! Maybe someone wants to give me $1 for this piece, or I may be surprised and someone pays me for the dinner of that evening.

Today I found out (thanks to this news article) that I am now again eligible to vote in UK elections! Well, since I'm still technically a British citizen, have a UK passport, and know what my NI number is, I went ahead and registered.
Huh!

Brits living abroad for more than 15 years now have the right to vote in the UK general election.Yazmina García (BBC News)
Gratz! Hope you can help make a difference even remotely/from sidelines :>
Know of any other folks in similar situation who should be made aware of this too?
every vote makes a difference (ok maybe exactly but it certainly cannot hurt). Not just your vote but so many other votes out there in general all thinking "it won't make a difference" can indeed lead to a difference.
Right wing LOVES voter suppression, the more the people are properly informed on the topics and are enabled to vote - the better for society. Fascism thrives off fear/doubt and silencing of opposition any means necessary.
Hoping for the best for UK here from US.
Voters in the UK and abroad have either not received their ballots or have been left with too little time to return themRachel Obordo (The Guardian)

It's been a while, but I'm watching HTTYD again. This time I'm just seeing Toothless and Hiccup as best buds — ignore species, they are just two young guys hanging out and keeping each other company. (Of course, Toothless doesn't have much choice if he doesn't want to be grounded…)
As usual, the bit where Toothless lets Hiccup touch for the first time makes a lump in my throat. Astrid's first flight is still good too. The whole thing's still bloody good.
I have a deep love of the music of those films. John Powell did a stunning job.
The intro fantastically introduces the leitmotif's for each character and it spends the rest of the film leaning on that and reinforcing each characters theme.
Right up until Test Drive.

“How to help someone use a computer”
https://pages.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/agre/how-to-help.html
> Whenever they start to blame themselves, respond by blaming the computer. Then keep on blaming the computer, no matter how many times it takes
Yes!
I don’t think that most Silicon Valley folks realize that most people, even and perhaps especially young people, kinda hate technology
We use it, because we feel like we need to, but no one is going to storm the barricades to save Instagram or Bumble
i don't think people realize how bad android mobile phones really are when you compare them to PCs
imagine not being able to be administrator on windows because if you enable it, a bunch of apps will refuse to run for no good reason
imagine not being able to reinstall windows or another operating system on your PC because you need to ask the computer manufacturer for permission to unlock your bootloader
i'm tired of putting up with this crap on phones, it's abhorrent
