In case the historic nature of of this moment, is lost on you...
A timeline of American Vice Presidents. Until the red square, she would have been a slave. Until the blue square she would have gone to segregated schools (if at all). Up to the yellow square she was not allowed to vote. It wasn't until the green square she could have her own bank account. Now she is Vice President, and on November 5th she will be elected President of the United States. #KamalaHarris #election2024 #USpol

I have to show off this amazing artwork I got.

I have a soft spot for 1980s and 1990s style anime, as I grew up with the likes of Toonami and Saturday night [adult swim].

I love this art piece so so much. 💜💙

Major tech companies are producing far more carbon emissions than they suggest in their sustainability reports.

They’re lobbying hard to rewrite the rules on how emissions are calculated to show net zero on paper, but not in practice.

Soo there is Resonite. It's a bit like if VRChat had unity built in, and you could access all the building tools in-platform, collaboratively with others. A lot of the avatars are still Blender uploads of course, but you can do a lot within the platform, too.

I’m supremely annoyed that nearly all services now pin identity and authentication on an E-mail or Cell phone.

This does NOT stop illegitimate users. New E-mail and burner phones are easy to get.

It DOES however make legit users more vulnerable. Taking over someone’s Email account or phone number, even for a short period, may give an attacker easy access to take over your identity and accounts, sometimes in irreversible ways.

Authentication should be a Username, Password and TOTP. If you want to offer less secure/’passwordless/convenience’ options like email, phone, whatever, go right ahead. I can choose to NOT use those.

@BorealSea Yep, and if you have that option, you should be using it! What is far less secure are the "OTP" options like a code sent in E-mail or via SMS.

Latest reminder that if you buy something that the maker calls "smart" you are setting yourself up for being ripped off.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/08/smart-sous-vide-cooker-to-start-charging-2-month-for-10-year-old-companion-app/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

I go out of my way to avoid "smart" stuff -- but it's increasingly difficult to find.

Someone will make a lot of money when they open a store that sells things that purchasers fully own.
