Anyone have recommendations for where I could get this thing printed and sent to me in the UK? I've taken a look at a few search results and Surface Scan seems surprisingly cheaper than the others. I've never really interacted with 3D printing before though, other than looking at stuff online and thinking how cool it is, so I have not much idea how to tell whether any particular service is any good.

@Hambone Fakenamington @Dragon There is also that! (This post was partly a way to indirectly do that without having to make assumptions about who has a 3D printer and is okay with being asked a favour.)

@CenturyAvocado hah those only just about fit on the print bed after some messing with rotation. (I have a small printer)

I just finished rewatching the first three Kung Fu Panda films and they are far better than any films named "Kung Fu Panda" have any right to be. I didn't even want to watch the first when it came out because the title made me think it would be really dumb. Boy was I wrong. 🤷‍♂️

Google is effectively killing AOSP by no longer sharing code until there is a major release from the internal development team.
This will not only be a big blow to AOSP, but it also basically makes it so external contributions will no longer be accepted.

By next week Android will be 1 step away from becoming closed source.

@souldessin Maybe. But Linux phones are still a long way from being on par with iOS or Android. I've been rooting for them for a long time, but development has been at a snail's pace.

But I'd love to see it, because I'd love to see an alternative to iOS / Android out there.

1
@souldessin Most of what I've seen is something similar, where the LInux apps either aren't available or aren't optimized for mobile. But then part of the reason to use Linux is to avoid Android and it's often very data grabby apps. So this answer kinda' falls flat. And right now, Linux on phones has enough trouble just running and getting all the hardware to work. Adding a layer of emulation on top could cause it to be even more prone to issues and instability.

I forget if I posted this here, but I'm offering an eBook version of my first book for free for another month or so.

https://unixdragon.com/Theta/

The purpose of this is to introduce people to my story universe and my series, plus a bit of marketing for the books to come . . . but mostly to get eyes on it to find and fix any errors that came through in setting up the new printing.

(For publishing/ebook nerds: The first version of Theta was a custom-authored ePub version for each platform. It was ok, but it broke on quite a few of them. Generation two—this generation—I'm using Vellum, which I used for Dreams of Refugium. It was expensive, but worth it :)

This piece was inspired by a drawing I did back in 2015, one I had completely forgotten about! During an art jam at my second ever furry convention, MFF 2015, I doodled a random fox with his hands hidden behind his back (probably because I was too lazy to draw hands, haha).

I later learned that, at the time, a boy saw my sketch and imagined I had drawn his fursona. He shared this confession with me just a year ago, and I found it so heartwarming. It reminded me that even the simplest drawings can hold deep meaning for those who see them.

Here’s the original piece from 2015: https://www.deviantart.com/pandapaco/art/Random-fox-not-Biro-584883747

And now, 10 years later, I’ve reimagined the drawing, this time making Adam the character of it. He still playfully hides his hands, as if up to something mischievous.

The characters you draw are some of the most charming creatures I've ever laid eyes on.🥹💕

I dunno how you manage to pack so much endearing (& enduring!😉) personality into your portraits, but I can *easily* pick your art out from the crowd whenever I stumble upon it.🥰

Thanks for making such lovely character paintings, and for sharing them with us, here!🙌🎉✨🙏

Pippin friendica
Given that this may be one of the most joyful things I've ever laid eyes (or rather, ears) on, why do I sometimes find myself close to crying when I listen to it?
1
Pippin friendica
The answer, I think, is that a lot of things like this make me feel some really painful nostalgia or regret. Like I've lost part of my life, something I previously had or did that I enjoyed, and will never have again; or that I'm never going to get something into my life that I really want to happen, or that I've missed the window of time when it would be possible.

Chinese curses really are the best.

Everyone's heard "May you live in interesting times", of course. We're all living that.

Next on the ladder, it's "May you come to the attention of those in authority."

And the top of the scale? "May the Gods give you everything you wish for."

I kinda get that whole looking at a musician and saying "oh it looks effortless" when looking at the recent vid I put out... it was deffo not effortless (I learned that song yesterday and it took me a good hour to get a moderately ok take); the fingers aren't necessarily like going nuts. there was a lot of I guess "cross-fingering" and the scale was odd and the take was as fast as it was because I was running out of patience

BUT, that's the whole idea of music, it's a snapshot of how you're feeling at the time, the mirror image - how people enjoy it, or interpret it is not up to you.

still, love the idea of reaching into the rich tapestry of folk and bringing it to the furry crowd, as much as I feel apprehension in this instance of given y'know recent tensions & the source material. I think it's personally irrelevant, culture is culture, and tunes are tunes and what's fundamental is the beauty of that particular melody and the rich history in it, glad to share it ❤️

"If you were a product person at IBM or Xerox, so you make a better copier or computer. So what? When you have monopoly market share, the company's not any more successful.

So the people that can make the company more successful are sales and marketing people, and they end up running the companies. And the product people get driven out of the decision-making forums, and the companies forget what it means to make great products. The product sensibility and the product genius that brought them to that monopolistic position gets rotted out by people running these companies that have no conception of a good product versus a bad product."

y'know, i always thought that folks such as Steve Jobs were predicting the future of the tech industry decades before such things we deal with now were commonplace. I've never been much of an Apple guy outside of their vintage products from the 80s and 90s, but I really do think that Apple during the 80s, 90s and 00s had actual products that could last for generations, with the only real things that go wrong being capacitors, PRAM batteries or brittle plastic after a couple of decades. these days it's like you buy an Apple device and it works, but only in the sense that it'll work really well for a little bit, then after a while, it'll still work, but it'll be knackered to hell and back.

About to take a shower, having been clambering around in my loft again.

It's definitely one of those "three solid points of contact at all times" lofts, not the wimpy floorboarded type; if you imagine all the plasterboard not being there, so between the joists it's a straight drop into the room (or stairwell!) below, that would probably inspire the correct amount of caution.

2
Pippin friendica
At least I have confirmed a cable route I'm planning! Found a couple of cables which go up to the loft inside one of the wardrobes, across to the front of the house, then down beside the stack pipe behind both the showers to a little boxed-in section next to the front door. They are part of the (non-functional) alarm system the house came with and I've confirmed they're the same at both ends by tying some string on where they poke out of the wall in the hall, pulling the wires from the loft, and verifying the string has been partly pulled into the wall. Now I can get some longer string and, while pulling out those redundant wires, I can pull through a cord to let me get whatever cabling I want through in future. First one going in will be ethernet from the study (just next to the front door so it'll be an easy drill-hole from that boxed-in bit) to the loft, down through that wardrobe, out into the loft over the utility room and into the little 6U network cabinet I'm planning to stick on the wall. 🙂 Then there will be another one from the cabinet to a new hole I'll drill in the plasterboard above the stairs to hang a ceiling access point there. Another one to my office (one of the bedrooms repurposed - handily just the other side of the wall from the utility room loft). And probably others! There's a bunch of power sockets I want to add too when I get round to it.
