Mastodon still confuses the hell out of me. I just saw a post that confused me cuz it seemed to have no context. Took me a while to realise that it's a reply to something else except there's zero indication on the post that it's a reply.
Not sure if it's intended behaviour or just a bug.
@mattsqu @pippin
I'm not sure it's to do with instance, but it does seem to show it sometimes but not always at the top.
On some there'sa reply arrow at the top of the post with "replied to *name*.I've seen that for people who are and arent on the same instance.
Otherwise it seems to put @*name* at the start of the post. & the reply arrow at the bottom is a double arrow.
Mousing over the reply arrow also seems to show a "reply to thread" tooltip on all replies.
@CanisRufus @mattsqu @pippin
The arrow shows if there are replies to that post but doesn't indicate that the post is a reply to another one.
There's no reply arrow at the top on mine.
This is a major failing on Mastodon. If there are different instances there should be a consistent way that they work in order to effectively communicate!
In the image how can you tell Pippin is replying to me or to anyone at all?
Oh. In the text entry box in Friendica it shows the username I'm replying to, but that disappears when I actually post - I assume it's in metadata so Friendica decides it doesn't need to be in the actual post text. But then I do see plenty of replies posted from Mastodon which also don't start with a username, but *are* threaded properly, so the post it's a reply to must be correctly listed in the metadata there too. When I click through to my reply on your instance it does show it properly threaded, so⦠I dunno? As you can see in the screenshot below, most of the other replies in this thread don't have a username at the start either, as shown on my Friendica instance. On the other hand, clicking through to the same thread on your Mastodon instance shows usernames at the start of every reply except mine. I don't know. It does seem to thread correctly though.
My biggest niggle is that Friendica shows only @-style usernames inside replies, but only display-names at the top of posts and replies, so matching them up sometimes requires annoying mousing-over to check usernames. π€·ββοΈ
Sorry, it's annoying, I guess it's just slightly different interpretations of some spec by different software.

@pippin It made my name show up twice XD
Yeh your replies just show up as individual messages in the feed. I have to click on it to get to the thread, which is fine, that's normal. It's just hard to tell when something is part of a conversation. I just have to look out for the lil double arrows I guess.
The fact that I have to spend ages talking to multiple people to work out what on earth is going on doesn't bode well tho :c
