Mastodon still confuses the hell out of me. I just saw a post that confused me cuz it seemed to have no context. Took me a while to realise that it's a reply to something else except there's zero indication on the post that it's a reply.

Not sure if it's intended behaviour or just a bug.

Yeah, that does seem to happen occasionally. I assume it's a bug somewhere. It happens rarely enough that I can say "oh, that again" and ignore it though. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

@pippin Looking though my feed, it's just you it seems. All of your replies to people show as new posts. I couldn't find any of your replies, including this one, that starts with the name of the person you're replying to.

@pippin I think it has something to do with what instances people are on. Like at least one person on your instance has to follow them...?

@mattsqu @pippin

I'm not sure it's to do with instance, but it does seem to show it sometimes but not always at the top.

On some there'sa reply arrow at the top of the post with "replied to *name*.I've seen that for people who are and arent on the same instance.

Otherwise it seems to put @*name* at the start of the post. & the reply arrow at the bottom is a double arrow.

Mousing over the reply arrow also seems to show a "reply to thread" tooltip on all replies.

@CanisRufus @mattsqu @pippin

The arrow shows if there are replies to that post but doesn't indicate that the post is a reply to another one.

There's no reply arrow at the top on mine.

This is a major failing on Mastodon. If there are different instances there should be a consistent way that they work in order to effectively communicate!

In the image how can you tell Pippin is replying to me or to anyone at all?

Canis Rufus mastodon (AP)
The reply arrow in that image is a double arrow not a single arrow. That's how I can tell. As far as I can see double reply arrows mean it's part of a thread, and single that it's a stand alone post.

@CanisRufus @mattsqu @pippin ohhhhh, wow that is subtle and I had no idea.

@mattsqu @pippin Yeah it's not obvious. Took me a long time to figure it out.

Oh. In the text entry box in Friendica it shows the username I'm replying to, but that disappears when I actually post - I assume it's in metadata so Friendica decides it doesn't need to be in the actual post text. But then I do see plenty of replies posted from Mastodon which also don't start with a username, but *are* threaded properly, so the post it's a reply to must be correctly listed in the metadata there too. When I click through to my reply on your instance it does show it properly threaded, so… I dunno? As you can see in the screenshot below, most of the other replies in this thread don't have a username at the start either, as shown on my Friendica instance. On the other hand, clicking through to the same thread on your Mastodon instance shows usernames at the start of every reply except mine. I don't know. It does seem to thread correctly though.

My biggest niggle is that Friendica shows only @-style usernames inside replies, but only display-names at the top of posts and replies, so matching them up sometimes requires annoying mousing-over to check usernames. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Sorry, it's annoying, I guess it's just slightly different interpretations of some spec by different software.

@pippin Yeh because the instance I use which uses the standard Masto layout/software doesn't indent like that. It just displays it the same as old school Twitter or in my case, Tweetdeck. So without the names on there it's hard to follow. I've never heard of Friendica.

@Cinnamon Vector @Cinnamon Vector (hmm, trying putting your username twice to see if that makes it show up once on Masto πŸ˜‰) No, Mastodon doesn't show threads in that tree-like structure, but does show replies on the same page as the post they are a reply to as far as I can see. But I guess when they are in a feed/timeline-style layout they just show up on their own? (I can't test that because my posts are unlisted so although I can look at the federated feed on your instance, my stuff doesn't show up there (as intended). If you click one of my post-looking replies, I'd guess that you would get to the page with your original post and all the replies underneath it, including mine, which would show that it was a reply? (Of course it'd be annoying to always have to do that…)

@pippin It made my name show up twice XD

Yeh your replies just show up as individual messages in the feed. I have to click on it to get to the thread, which is fine, that's normal. It's just hard to tell when something is part of a conversation. I just have to look out for the lil double arrows I guess.

The fact that I have to spend ages talking to multiple people to work out what on earth is going on doesn't bode well tho :c

@Cinnamon Vector @Cinnamon Vector πŸ€— It has more than its fair share of weirdnesses, I guess, made worse by having multiple bits of software implementing ActivityPub in fractionally different ways. You do get used to it though... πŸ™„ πŸ˜„ (At least, good luck getting used to it!)

@pippin I've been on here since 2018 and I'm still not used to it :|

it may depend on the app you are using i think
Cinnamon Vector mastodon (AP)
@pine I'm just using the website. It turns out it's one person I follow. For some reason none of their replies has the username of the person they're replying to so it just looks like a weird non-sequitur
