It occurs to me that I just can't use drawers properly. In my office room at the new house I have a bunch of chests of drawers, but… I just don't use them. I've put a few things in a couple of the drawers, but all that means is that I can't find those things, or I forget I have them. Most of the drawers are empty, but I don't have space and everything's cluttering up the floor and tops of the chests. I need shelves, not drawers, so I can see everything and find stuff when I want it. Drawers are just… non-space to me. When they are closed, their insides don't exist, so they're useless. Shelves, and transparent boxes, are so much easier.

I used the file-by-pile method for many years. Worked great as long as no one tried to neaten things up

@Mira To be honest, shelves are quite compatible with file-by-pile. They just give you more surface space for the piles! (Technically, so do drawers, I suppose, but I need to be able to see my stuff…)
