I wholeheartedly believe that every man should watch this video, because i bet none can grasp quite how terribly women get treated, even at work, without being challenged
@thisisjofrank:
âI gave a talk at EMF titled "Men in Tech #YesAllMen", in which I told my experience of being a woman in tech. I was afraid to publish it in case it affected my current or future employment.
With all the current news I would like to add my 2Âą. So here is the recording:â

Somehow this reminded me of a quote from The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, about things that lots of people do, each thinking it's just a one-off unique incident and it doesn't form any kind of pattern, while the person they're each separately, individually, doing it to is having this thing happen to them *all the fucking time* and is absolutely pissed off with it. I don't know if that's at all relevant.
"I'm a private detective.""Oh?" said Kate in surprise, and then looked puzzled.
"Does that bother you?"
"It's just that I have a friend who plays the double bass."
"I see," said Dirk.
"Whenever people meet him and he's struggling around with it, they all say the same thing, and it drives him crazy. They all say, 'I bet you wished you played the piccolo.' Nobody ever works out that that's what everybody else says. I was just trying to work out if there was something that everybody would always say to a private detective so that I could avoid saying it."
"No. What happens is that everybody looks very shifty for a moment, and you got that very well."
FWIW, I'm acutely aware of the infractions against women in general, not just in tech, and still remember each of my personal infractions, although they were arguably minor: I also know what perimenopause is, and none of this was new in any way.
It's easy to blame bystanders, but it's very hard for a man to stand up against other men exhibiting sketchy behavior. Think about it: where are the unwritten social norms that what the man did was objectively an infraction? You're once again hitting the same barrage of "the woman doesn't mind; who are you to mind?" or "it's just banter" lines of reasoning, even as the man.
Jo doesnât really use fedi but originally posted that on Bluesky here:
