Ugh. Today did not go well. I thought it was going well, I managed to get my bike's side-stand greased so it (hopefully) won't be such a (literal) pain to manipulate with my left boot. Then I got entirely ready to go for a ride to my old home, check some things, collect post, get more stuff ready to bring, etc. Packed my bags, got all my gear on, ear plugs in, GPS running, pushed the bike out of the garage (very difficult, I noticed), did the pre-ride checks, and discovered that the chain is tight. And not just slightly tight, extremely tight. Barely any play at all. So tight it's surprising it hasn't snapped. Must be what's making the bike so stiff to push by hand. Only recently I cleaned, adjusted and lubed the chain after working the kinks out of it, and I'm sure I got it just right, certainly nowhere near as tight as it is now. But now it's far too tight. Had to abandon my ride, didn't get anything else done today, feeling annoyed and out of sorts and useless. Maybe I'll redo chain maintenance tomorrow an see if I can get it right this time. Or maybe the chain's just knackered - it is a little rusty after all. This kind of thing makes me wonder why I bother.

I redid the chain adjustment, and wow it was far too far out. I don't know what I did wrong, but the chain's kinked and rusty and horrible and I think it's going to have to be replaced. I replaced the chain and sprockets myself maybe 10 years ago so it's lasted pretty well, I expect (I've done just over 30k miles since I bought the bike, not sure how many before I replaced the chain). I don't know if I'll do it myself again or take it somewhere to get it done. I was quite pleased to have done it myself (even bending the stupid front sprocket washer like you're supposed to, which is a right pain to do), and I'm not entirely sure if I want to do it again.
