15 minute outage on my FTTP connection just now. I miss being in London, where I could easily get both an Openreach FTTC line (and probably could have upgraded to FTTP if I'd got round to it) and an HFC (hybrid fibre coax, i.e. cable TV network) line and configured them for auto failover. Here, I can only get openreach; only available backups seem to be cellular (ick, and not great connectivity from here, and expensive to actually use) or leased line (likely around Β£300/month!) There used to be an altnet here, and the toby boxes are still in the pavement, but as far as I can tell they no longer sell their own fibre, just openwretch. I'm so used to having bulletproof internet with the dual line setup I had in London that it really gets under my skin when we have a few minutes of outage at the new place.

have you looked at using https://www.aa.net.uk + L2TP they offer with an alt ISP for redundancy?

@ThePhoenix oh, I have L2TP/IPsec tunnels over both FTTP and 5G back to my own datacentre network, the problem is the lack of redundant infrastructure where I now live and the cost of actually using the 5G backup (so only critical things are routed through it). There are, as far as I can tell, no altnets here, unlike the old house where as well as openreach there was virgin, community fibre, and possibly others. It's openreach or openreach here (or mobile), which isn't much of a selection!

I think you can get talktalk backhaul via AA? Not sure if that’s enough of a differentiating factor tho for the cost 😬

@ThePhoenix Aaah, I think you may be referring to this? https://www.aa.net.uk/ethernet/

I think (and their FAQ agrees) that's basically a leased line. I got some quotes for one a while back and the cheapest symmetric 1Gbps to this address was about Β£300/month (and I don't think it got much cheaper to reduce the data rate), so I'm not jumping on that particularly quickly. It's an option if I really need it. (There's also the 2-3 year typical minimum term to consider, given that I'm also trying to work out whether I want to change career.) I was hoping to have what I had at the old house: two *consumer* (i.e. cheap) internet access services with tunnels over each to my datacentre network and OSPF doing redundant routing over them.
