Why do I keep feeling compelled to dig out such huge purposeless underground spaces in survival-mode minecraft? It's such a time-sink and there's literally no purpose.

Screenshot of a huge underground room in Minecraft, from a vantage point at one end and several blocks above floor level. It is 4 chunks wide and extends 9 chunks into the distance (chunks are 16 blocks wide and long). IIRC it's 9 blocks high. The floor is a mix of deepslate and bedrock, while the dimly-visible walls and almost-invisble ceiling are mostly deepslate, a very dark coloured block, with a few glass areas where I've blocked off existing caves. A sparse but regularly-spaced grid of torches light the floor and prevent mob spawns (except slimes!) In the mid-ground are a couple of chests, a crafting table, an infinite water source and a bed, all in a tight cluster.
