I once told my computer science PhD supervisor I didn't know what an array was. It turned out he'd just pronounced it *ever* so slightly differently (I think he put the stress on the first syllable instead of the second) and that was enough that I hadn't recognised the word and couldn't figure out what he was talking about! (Actually I do know what arrays are…!)
