MASTODON
PROS: cool hacktivists made the backend for it!
CONS: cool hacktivists made the frontend for it.

this is a joke i think the ui could be better but it’s fine

As a backend guy with a reflexive fear of frontend technologies, I feel it.

:blobcatcry: Keep it awaaaaaaaaaaaaay
People keep telling me that mastodon is super complicated, especially the principle of following people from other instances.
@Tiwy57 i get that; “follow from my instance” should be an easier thing. i keep having to put it in the search bar or use functionality through a third party app
@Tiwy57 tbh, that's why extensions like fediact popped up for web browsing >.>
@Nomaxice @Tiwy57 i saw those; i stick to the apps because i like to be able to interact from a specific account, not sure if those were multi-instance. i also toot a lot on mobile/ipad though, so i can’t install them on safari/firefox mobile
@Tiwy57 I get that! Fediact is limited to just making so you don't act from a certain server on specific other servers you list
Though I think.. GLaze was it, allows you to "switch" accounts to interact from different accounts you own?

@Nomaxice @Tiwy57 I bet then their argument becomes "why do I have to use an extension for basic functionality"

To which I'd reply "The same is true for the bird and there it's considered essential to make the damn thing pleasant and usable in the first place"

@SebinNyshkim @Nomaxice @Tiwy57 nobody complained about “reddit enhancement suite” and i couldn’t go a day without hearing a redditor tell someone to use it lmfao

@Nomaxice @Tiwy57 There's also me using an adblocker to hide the dreadful "Trends" section because it's all rage bait and sadness. Without that I get exhausted within minutes of even looking what's trending

@SebinNyshkim @Tiwy57 the day I found tweetdeck was the day I stopped being able to use web twitter so... Yeah, considering at the time it wasn't owned by twitter.

I get though yeah, it's not perfect, it's not super duper polished with millions of $ invested but... Yeah. At least, it's our thing, furry servers are by furries for furries and we can just be ourselves >.>

@SebinNyshkim @Nomaxice @Tiwy57 agree, i also don’t mind dealing with the quirks of mastodon because it’s open source and i can run it myself

@SebinNyshkim @Nomaxice @Tiwy57
And the day TweetDeck gets locked away is the day I will probably stop trying to keep up with my feeds.

T–6 days :blobfoxsnugowo:

@:noma_idle: Noma :veripawed4: @:verified: tiwy57~]$ :idle: @taco, bird/cat :verified420: I addded my instance's search URL to Firefox's search engines. Now I just drag a link to the search bar, click the correct icon (which is admittedly still slightly annoying), and it's done :)

I mean, I'm severely disappointed that my personal feed is half people I don't even follow, and it's not retweets. Put that shit back on the Federated timeline, please.
@ysera i think you can hide that in the settings? hmm

I'll have to look.

I've already had to mute some random people for uncensored porn or fetish content or something else that wasn't getting caught in my filters.

I think these federated social media things should have front-end separate from back-end. It's like if postfix and exim each came with their own built-in, slightly cronky webmail. That would just be weird.

At least it's not a laggy piece of shit like most modern websites are. Javascript was a mistake.

@terry_fox god, you're so fucking right.

JS is like sodium in your diet: you do need some to operate in a healthy manner but it's really easy to overdo it

Blender was shit until some non-hacktivists got in on the UI and said "ok no, you CAN'T say 'just learn the keyboard shortcut', the 'long way' has to EXIST for there to even BE a keyboard shortcut!"

@hperrin I recently switched to Ivory for the app/frontend, Mastodon is pretty usable now!

programming UIs then?
