So, Windows Subsystem for Linux.

I generally like it. If I want to do Linux-shaped things on a Windows machine, which I often do, then even WSL1 is both faster, and a more faithful imitation, than Cygwin. And WSL2 is better still, on both counts. Plus you get to pick the distro of your choice. I haven't used Cygwin in years.

But I can't shake the feeling that if SQL is pronounced 'sequel', then WSL ought to be pronounced 'weasel'.

Why not "wessel," like Chekhov in Star Trek IV?

@Tufty Indigo @Simon Tatham As in "nuclear WSL"?

(Trying to resist the urge to add "but SQL *isn't* pronounced 'sequel'". But apparently failing. :>)

@pippin Yeah, I always pronounce SQL by spelling the letters out too, but that nuclear WSL has sailed.

honestly, if I didn't feel a degree of obligation to the Cygwin packages I maintain, there's a reasonable chance I'd have dropped it for WSL myself. That, and I still find /dev/clipboard useful in a way I think WSL still can't emulate.

@me_and huh, I didn't even know Cygwin had a /dev/clipboard! That does sound useful, I admit.
