In looking through stuff and seeing a lot of comments about how lots of #furry people are also autistic. Figured I'd just fire out a poll and get some numbers, just out of personal curiosity.

... Numbers which will likely not be representative because Mastodon probably also has a lot of autistic people. Oh well. Still, could be interesting.

(For this poll, assume aspergers also "counts" as autism)

  • I'm furry and autistic (30%, 84 votes)
  • I'm furry and I think I'm autistic (21%, 57 votes)
  • I'm furry but not autistic (18%, 50 votes)
  • I'm furry and don't know if I'm autistic (19%, 53 votes)
  • I'm not a furry or otherwise don't want to answer (10%, 28 votes)

Was definitely my experience in fandom, tons of them in the general fandom (and the convention inbox). It was incredibly hard trying to advocate for them - and explain to other (mostly NT) con teams that attendees asking for rules clarifications was a sign of good faith and a desire to follow rules. Some were incredibly toxic towards AS staff members and attendees.

just to highlight this and the ridiculousness behind it - if you removed the neurodivergent people from the fandom, you're talking about most of the attendance. Though neurotypicals and people with extremely toxic views were the majority of con staff I worked with. The ASD folks were largely in lower rank positions and tended to be attacked if and when they climbed the ladder. NTs and NDs alike seemed to just accept this, with the usual victim blaming.

I have seen a strong correlation in my encounters with both furries and autistic folks. Lots of my friends are furries and not neurotypical. I have no identity as a furry personally, but I can find anthropomorphic characters and art interesting and just as moving as anything else. Also noticed a pretty strong correlation with furries and queerness.

I have never been diagnosed, but I have some form of neurodiversity going on.

Disclaimer: This is my anecdotal experience.
I have no idea, really. I strongly suspect I have ADHD, but when I went to see the mental health practitioner she said “you’re autistic” and my doctor agreed with both suspicions, but I have to wait between 1 and 10 years to be seen by a psychologist you can properly diagnose me. (So I voted ‘I think I have autism’)
